My name is Santiago, and I was born and raised in Quito, Ecuador. I am a licensed national tour guide with over 22 years of experience in ecotourism, birding, wildlife photography, and natural history interpretation. My passion for nature began early, and it eventually led me to begin my guiding career at the Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve in northwestern Ecuador, where I served as the resident guide and gained my first experience in responsible tourism. Since then, I have guided tours across a variety of ecosystems throughout South America, including the Galápagos Islands, Amazon Rainforest, Andean highlands, and coastal regions of Ecuador. Beyond Ecuador, I also work as a wildlife photography guide in Brazil (Pantanal and the Atlantic Forest), Patagonia (both Chile and Argentina), Colombia, and Peru, where I lead tours focused on capturing iconic species such as jaguars, pumas and other rare wildlife in their natural habitats. I’m the co-founder of Neotropical Nature and Birding Trips, a company dedicated to promoting responsible travel as a means to support conservation and community-based tourism. Through our tours, we aim to share the magic of nature while contributing directly to local initiatives in environmental education, sustainable development, and habitat preservation. In addition to guiding, I’ve participated in scientific research and conservation projects throughout Ecuador, including bird banding and nest monitoring programs in the Chocó bioregion and Galápagos. I’ve also worked as a resident naturalist and cultural interpreter in several Amazonian lodges and have led photography and birding tours throughout the country and the continent. Join me for an unforgettable journey through the breathtaking landscapes and rich biodiversity of Ecuador and beyond. Whether you're a birder, photographer, or nature lover, I’ll help you connect deeply with the natural world and make memories that will last a lifetime. Overview of your Quito tour

Andean bears are one of the most emblematic and elusive mammals found in the highlands and cloud forests of Ecuador. It is in the paramo, north east of Quito where, you can increase your probabilities of a great encounter with bears and other Andean wildlife, sometimes close enough to have wonderful views and photographs. The area to visit covers the surroundings of the Cayambe Coca National Park, a special natural feeding site where the presence of bears is frequent all year around. The paramo is rich in important food sources for the bears' mostly herbivorous diet; Puya sp. is abundant in this ecosystem also covered with grasslands, small bushes and elfin trees. In the afternoon we'll visit Guango Cloud Forest Reserve to to get a taste of the beautiful Andean temperate forest and its rich diversity of birds. With over 19 years of experience as a guide in this area, and a real passion for wildlife and nature in general, I invite you to join me in a day of nature exploration in a breathtaking scenery.

We had a wonderful tour with Santiago! He was prompt, professional, and had a great eye for spotting birds, etc. He was also flexible on the pick up time as we wanted an earlier start. We were hoping to see Andean bears but the weather wasn't very cooperative and neither were the bears. The number and variety of birds that we saw was amazing though. Our favorites were the toucans and the long-tailed slyph. He took us to a private cloud forest where we also had a tasty lunch. The weather was a bit chilly even for those of us used to cooler temps and we were glad we had the layers we did. Santiago also saved the day for me as I had forgotten to charge my camera batteries. He happened to have an extra one that I was able to use while mine was charging at the ranger station. He also provided suggestions for the best camera settings to capture the birds we saw.

Our family of four enjoyed a great day with Santiago, getting into the Ecuadorian outdoors and learning about Ecuador through his perspective and knowledge of the plants and animals. We were lucky enough to see and get photos of an Andean bear, watching it forage and eat the plants it likes. We also saw various birds in different habitats, including hummingbirds at a lodge, purchased some handmade local gifts, and sampled Ecuadorian food at lunch in a small village. Santiago was easy to talk with, very knowledgable about his country and the wildlife we were out to see, and we look forward to booking another tour with him in the future.

Santiago was a terrific guide! I enjoyed my day with him very much. He was attentive, informative and very passionate about conservative. His views and mine were very well matched. When I had a brush with altitude sickness he was quick to respond and took us to a lower elevation immediately. He also arranged for me to plant a tree that he tells me will be a canopy tree in 20 years! Santiago is an Ecuadorian gem and I highly recommend him!

Santiago is one of the most knowledgeable people we have ever traveled with. Not only does he know birds, he knows history and geographic info, info about volcanoes and ecological issues in this area and much more. We saw birds we will never see again - the rufous bellied seedsnipe, Andean potoo, several unusual hummingbirds and more. He is very personable and we thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Santiago was a superior guide - it is obvious that he is very proud of his country and more than eager to share his knowledge about history, cultures, and many more topics. We were interested in photography of birds and mammals and he worked tirelessly to find new species for us. Although we didn't see the spectacled bear, we returned to the same viewing spots several times in case a bear was visible. Santiago speaks excellent English and is a very safe driver. We would highly recommend him!!!
