Theodor Herzl, Siegmund Freud, Gustav Mahler, Hedy Lamar, Billy Wilder, Arnold Schönberg, Teddy Kollek... the list of famous and well-known Jewish Austrians is long. In Vienna, more than in almost any other city in Europe, the history of its Jewish citizens is so closely linked to its rise as a metropolis of science and the arts. Painting, music, science - Vienna at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries was the heyday of the Jewish community. Until 1938, Vienna had an active Jewish community with dozens of synagogues and prayer houses. However, the Nazi terror brought this flourishing era to an abrupt end: two thirds of Vienna's Jews were expelled and more than 65,000 were killed in concentration camps. Join me on a walk along the history of Jewish Vienna. We will experience and talk about the beginnings of the Jewish community in the middle-ages, its heyday at the time of the fin de siecle and the near extinction of the once flourishing community through the crimes of National Socialism.
Our city walk takes us past important sites of the Jewish community and its history in the inner districts - from Vienna's first district with its magnificent palaces of wealthy and successful Jewish financiers to the Shoah Memorial and on to Leopoldstadt, where the center of our small but active Jewish community is located today, having emerged from a ghetto in the 17th century. The beginnings of the Jewish community in Vienna Fin de siecle - The heyday of Jewish life in our city Vienna and the situation of the Jews at the time of the Nazi terror Traces of former Jewish life in Vienna Jewish Vienna today The Vienna City Temple Please note: This walk does not include a visit to the Jewish Museum or the Synagogue. Should you wish to do so, I will be happy to adapt this tour accordingly and put together a customized tour for you. The walk as offered here is purely for sightseeing from the outside.

We explore Jewish Vienna on foot. If the weather is really bad, we may consider taking the subway for a short distance.
Vienna, Vienna, Austria
The walk starts in the city center. I would love to choose a meeting point that is convenient for you. Depending on where you are staying during your time in Vienna, a pick-up at your hotel would also be no problem.
