As a museum professional, I have meticulously studied museum practice at leading institutions in Europe and the USA. While my academic background includes a Master of Arts in Art History, my extensive experience has convinced me that art history alone offers a somewhat narrow perspective. This insight inspired the creation of the curated art tours in Vienna's art museums. On this museum tour not only will you see the most famous paintings and objects in the collection, but also learn to look at art pieces with a critical eye and to distinguish between the brilliant and the average. I will help you to find the key to 'reading' works of art and you will not realize how your understanding of museum exhibits will be enhanced as you begin to see and understand their true value. The purpose of my excursion is to help you understand where the status of a painting has been influenced by successful PR, where technical execution has played a role, where there is the influence of aura or cultural tradition, and where there is genuine craftsmanship. The main thing is to look carefully!
Your Vienna tour itinerary
You will walk through all the halls of the Museum of Art History. Learn the history of its main objects and together we will try to articulate why Titian, Rubens, Vermeer and other renowned masters of the brush are so admired. What is so special about their paintings? You will learn how the theft of Cellini's Saliera affected the value of this work and how restitution procedures can help to bring new paintings suddenly into focus. With my help, you will be able to compare Bruegel's Tower of Babel with his own Hunters in Winter, and Caravaggio's Madonna and Rosary with works by his followers. At the end of the tour, you will be able to answer the question of whether this work is a "masterpiece" or not. - - - The museum houses magnificent collections; 3 hours is the recommended minimum. You may extend the tour up to 5 hours for an additional €120 per hour.
