The Urban Landscape: History & Nature in Salta

From the time Jes picked us up at our hotel and we ascended San Bernardo Hill to the time she dropped us off, six hours later, we learned so much and felt truly cared for. I am a geocacher and there was a cache at the top of San Bernardo Hill that interested me. Jes did not know anything about geocaching, but she willingly followed my gps. When we arrived at the location, I thought I knew where it was, but at 79 I really didn't want to climb over unstable rocks. Jes came to the rescue, went to the likely location and excitedly found the geocache, which she brought to me so we could put both our names in the log. I was delighted to share something new with her because she was teaching us so very much. As we drove around the city, and San Lorenzo, she explained what we were seeing and how it fit into Salta's history, culture and politics. She is a truly knowledgeable guide! After a stop for Gelato- she knows all the best places!- we went to the main plaza to visit MAAM, the Cathedral and the Cabildo. At MAAM, Jes was extremely helpful. We do not speak Spanish and Jes carefully explained what the posters were saying in Spanish, providing far more background. For me, this was a moving highlight of our experience. When we were there, the Cathedral was absolutely beautiful. It was the beginning of the yearly Fiesta del Milagro (Feast of the Miracles) where thousands of people in the rural, mountainous villages do a pilgrimage to Salta. Jes explained more about that and also , later, the tremendous history depicted in the Cabildo. as we walked through that marvelous building. Jes really knows this region and she is such fun to be with. Conversation never lagged. Laughter happened often. We had done a tour to Salinas Grandes with her the previous day- since our son arranged this one, he will be writing the review. Suffice it to say it was amazing. We were in Argentina for two weeks and the time we spent with Jes in Salta and the surrounding area was a highlight of our trip. We explored Salta and the surrounding region with Jes and could not have asked for a better guide. From the very beginning, Jes was professional, reliable and exceptionally quick and clear in her communication. Everything was easy and well organized, but at the same time never felt overly planned or formal. What we appreciated most was her remarkable knowledge of the region and its history. Jes knows an enormous amount about Salta and northwestern Argentina, but also about Argentine history and society more broadly. She doesn’t just tell you facts about the places you visit – she gives you the context that makes them much more interesting and helps you understand the region and the country better. And beyond being an excellent guide, Jes is simply a very enjoyable person to spend time with. She is friendly, easy to talk to, curious and a great companion on the road. We had many interesting conversations along the way, not only about history and Argentina, but about all sorts of things. So, from a group of very happy Estonians: thank you, Jes! We really enjoyed our time with you and would happily recommend you to anyone travelling to Salta and northwestern Argentina.
