The northern part of the Calchaqui Valley was the entrance gate of the Spanish conquerors in the early 1600s. Back then, the valley was populated and produced by the Calchaqui Nation, a gathering of different communities native to the region that had already fought and won the Incas in 1500s. As a result of this conquering there were 3Calchaquí Wars which were very violent and molded much of today's human settlement of the valley. Today it is a protected area of UNESCO known as QHAPAC ÑAN (the royal inca road). The town of Cachi is placed at 2600 masl, and it looks as if it was left behind in 1800s: its cobbled streets and colonial looking adobe brick houses have earned the town the award of Pueblo Mágico (Magic Towns, a government seal that values cultural heritage as architecture, folk ceremonies, art crafts, gastronomy and archaeological importance). It is also the highest wine-producing region of Salta Province, where Torrontés and Malbec are simply elegant.
Salta (early departure from your hotel) Lerma Valley (we will drive south through small gaucho's towns) Quebrada de Escoipe (drive through an outstanding ravine which winds across the hills, we will stop for photos and also to socialize with the locals) Cuesta del Obispo (a steep slope and a dirt road that will lead us to 3, 400 masl. We will stop for photos along this road) Piedra del Molino (stop to sightsee) Parque Nacional Los Cardones (drive through this national park and learn about cacti, several stops on authorized viewpoint areas) Cachi (we will stop here for lunch, to visit the town and its church, see the archeological museum or visit a Bodega. All these activities can be customized for the visitor) Return to the city of Salta on the same road. Estimated time of tour: 10 hours
