I've lived and worked in San Francisco since 1975, and am quite fond of—and, perhaps, slightly jaundiced toward—my long-adopted home, a. k. a. "The City". I have been numbered as a local student/practitioner of fine, commercial and industrial arts: commercial graphics, multi-media design, and as a craftsman in our once-mighty commercial printing industry. I'm occasionally zealous in defense/restoration of natural habitats, parks, regional agriculture, and historic architecture. Special appreciation must go to food—glorious food! Cosmopolitanism has its benefits; San Francisco is a foodie's paradise. The ride never ends. Truly I am a tourist in my own life here in "The City", "Baghdad by the Bay", "The Queen of the Pacific", "Fog City", or (more poetically) "the cool, grey city of love". San Francisco is a very (_____) city. Fill in the blank with all sorts and kinds. It not unusual to fill the blank with "Jewish". After it seemed like EVERYBODY including the aforementioned people was moving out of town (except various flavours of Chinese people). . . in came The Russians! In the 1990's, Russian Jews comprised some 90% of 120, 000-ish immigrants from the former Soviet Union. By contrast, 90% of Soviet immigrants to Sacramento were "Baptist-Pentecostal", also fiercely persecuted people back there, back then. But stories of Our Fair City and her peoples go *much* further back. This tour touches on a bunch of 'em. . . .
-- Where were the first Jewish services in San Francisco? -- Why Glatt Kosher in the middle of Chinatown? -- Why on earth are there TWO of the biggest Reformed Synagogue? -- Why might one think they are in Odessa, while in The Richmond District? -- Delicatessens like New York? You bet! -- Black bread, kvass and blini? Mm-hmmmm! -- Chyebureckii, Vishnii, Pyelmenii, Konfyettii??? . . . and a few of your basic SF city tour destinations thrown in, just for you!
