I've lived and worked in San Francisco since 1975, and am quite fond of—and, perhaps, slightly jaundiced toward—my long-adopted home, a. k. a. "The City". I have been numbered as a local student/practitioner of fine, commercial and industrial arts: commercial graphics, multi-media design, and as a craftsman in our once-mighty commercial printing industry. I'm occasionally zealous in defense/restoration of natural habitats, parks, regional agriculture, and historic architecture. Special appreciation must go to food—glorious food! Cosmopolitanism has its benefits; San Francisco is a foodie's paradise. The ride never ends. Truly I am a tourist in my own life here in "The City", "Baghdad by the Bay", "The Queen of the Pacific", "Fog City", or (more poetically) "the cool, grey city of love". Overview of your San Francisco tour
This walking tour covers the downest of downtown starting with the American epoch (before the Gold Rush in 1849). This is not because there is little to see that preceded the American occupation in 1846, but because the traces of Spanish and Mexican occupation are too far away from the original village that became San Francisco. The stories of early-to-post-earthquake San Francisco range from glorious and heroic to appalling and, er, "colorful". We shall not shy away from any of it (but we will try to avoid being too, too frankly spoken).
