100 years ago, Södermalm was a poor district with cramped residential buildings for workers. Today, Södermalm is a trendy area with restaurants and shops. I'll show you lush environments and charming houses from the 1750s. I'll tell about the people who lived here and about their everyday life in both joy and sorrow. A footbridge leads over to the small island of Riddarholmen, where Riddarholm Church is located. Today, this place is a museum with many Swedish kings buried under it. Also under the church are the remains of a monastery from the 13th century. On the next island is Gamla Stan, one of the best preserved medieval cities. We'll wander along the narrow cobbled streets with buildings painted in gold. I also want to show you some of Stockholm's most beautiful doors, and the Great Church as well as the royal palace. The itinerary of this city tour can be adapted to your wishes:
·Our tour would start at Mariatorget, Södermalm where we'd walk up the stairs to Bastugatan and Ivar Lo park. We'd admire the view and listen to stories about the people who lived here in the past. ·A bridge would take us over Mälaren at the level of the railway and we'd soon reach Riddarholmen. Here we'd admire Riddarholm Church and the views towards Långholmen and Stockholm City Hall. ·We'd look at the beautiful House of Nobility, from the 17th century with fancy decorations on both the facade and the roof before wandering into the alleys of the Old Town and enjoy the atmosphere, seeing many old houses dating back to the Middle Ages. ·Next, onto the Cathedral, or the Great church where we'd enter to admire it from inside. ·Next, the huge Stockholm Palace, with over 600 rooms, but only about 20 larger rooms are open to the public. ·We'd end the tour at Stortorget (main square), with many cafes and restaurants. Feel free to join me for a Swedish fika (coffee + cinnamon roll) at 1649's Grillska bakery!
