Township Tour - Bo Kaap, Langa and Gugulethu

Kabelo promptly picked us up at our hotel and we were off to Table Mountain (we revised the tour since we have seen the townships in Joburg and Kabelo was flexible and willing). So glad we had him, as we easily navigated getting on the cable car to the top and he was full of interesting information (the circular cable cars--Swiss made--are filled with water, no sloshing, for ballast to keep the cars steady on the trips up and down, for instance). And we had the unusual day of clouds covering the city and but clear skies on the the mountain. Afterwards, we toured around (some sights invisible because of the cloud cover but we got the idea) and then to BoKapp--so colorful and such steep hills. Also drove around Cape Town some and saw the building where a bronze of Mandela stands as the man himself did when he was released from prison. We then went to an interesting local market and acquired some Zulu masks, etc., all with Kabelo's help. He seemed to know most everyone and was so fun to be around--our short tour ended all too soon. Heartily recommend Kabelo and thank him for a wonderful morning!

Perfect way to end a trip! I have a huge sweet tooth and once again Kabelo didn't disappoint! I'm still drooling! It was raining this morning and I wasn't feeling the greatest. Kabelo fixed it all. Got something to settle my stomach and then found our way to the best Koeksisters and Bomba (sp?) shop in Bo-Kaap. Headed to Charly's Bakery for some more yummy goodness and then to the District Six Museum. Driving, walking, sitting all filled with the best conversations and laughter. Kabelo M. The M must sand for Magnificent because he is! Can't wait to go back next year!

We were fortunate to join the township tour with Kabelo and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to look beyond the usual tourist sights or gain a deeper understanding of South Africa’s history and present-day realities. The tour is insightful and thought-provoking, offering a clear sense of what has changed in recent years and how much progress is still needed. Having lived and worked abroad, Kabelo is excellent at placing what you see into a broader local, national and international context, and he does so with balance, intelligence and warmth. He was also very attentive to our interests, adapting plans effortlessly when needed, which led to experiences and insights we might not otherwise have had. We left feeling informed, inspired, and with plenty to reflect on — a genuine highlight of our visit.

A very interesting and enlightening visit to several townships. We learned a lot about the history of the townships, of apartheid and that people of a wide variety of economic backgrounds live there. Highly recommended.

Great tour, we learned about the history and background of South Africa and the township/neighborhoods we visited. Kabelo was on time and great to converse with. We tried some local treats and bbq. We had a great time. Thank you, Kabelo!!!

Kabelo was an excellent tour guide. He drove our group of six around several townships in his comfortable van. and explained a lot to our group. He answered every question. Kabelo was enthusiastic and friendly. In Bo-Kaap, he bought us local treats and water. Would definately recommend him to anyone.
