After graduating with a 4 year social science degree, I worked in human rights and development during the build up to South Africa’s transition to democracy in 1994, which paved the way for our previously conservative, isolated country to open its doors to international tourism. It also opened my own doors to personal travels and adventures into the great wide world in the mid 1990’s, when I went exploring and took three years to come home! I loved all the places I visited, but couldn’t help casting my mind back to my own country with its breathtaking landscapes, nature, complex history and mix of beautiful people, which inspired me to qualify as a professional guide on my return, and start guiding in 2000. Working as a guide became the perfect marriage between my two great passions in life: travel and people! Besides Africa, I have travelled on five other continents and worked on three: two years in the UK, a few months on a summer camp for developmentally challenged adults in the USA, and a year of teaching English in Japan. A keen hiker, I regularly hike up Table Mountain and other mountains nearby, besides joining friends on multiple-day hikes further afield from time to time. This led to an interest in ecology, plants and flowers. Having been a hiker for more years than a guide, in 2023 I finally completed the onerous requirements to qualify as a hiking guide, in order to integrate this love into my guiding work. I also enjoy the local live music and theatre scene, restaurants and nightlife, and from time to time head out of the city to attend events ranging from weekend music festivals to the National Arts Festival in Makhanda and AfrikaBurn in the Tankwa Karoo desert. I have just as much fun exploring Cape Town's offerings of world-class artists, galleries and events, including the colourful world of street art. Every year or two I try to take a break, pack the car, and join friends on road trips within South Africa, and every few years I travel to neighbouring countries or abroad. If I can’t be travelling somewhere exciting myself, the next best thing is to be spending time with people who are! What a joy to see my own back yard through their eyes, and constantly be reminded of what a beautiful place I’m blessed to call home. The pandemic of 2020 to 2022 brought unprecedented challenges. My greatest joy during this time was taking part in an annual street art event (from 2021 to 2023) by leading walking tours to show people the art works and meet the artists busy creating them. I continued to lead my own street art walking tours after each event, initially with my own friends, but with a broader clientele of locals as word spread about this new offering. I am delighted to have survived in this industry that I love too much to leave. Come and join me on an adventure! Guide training: 1999: Garden Route tourist guide training course by Keith Burton. 2000: Cape Town & Western Cape tourist guide training course by Andre de Waal, Tourist Guide Institute. 2003: Eastern Cape & Northern Cape self study, assessed by May Huisamen, Drumbeat Academy. 2008: Nature Guiding training course at The Nature College by Johan Fourie. 2009: Gauteng & North West self study, assessed by May Huisamen, Drumbeat Academy. 2017: "Flight for Birders" birding course by Anton Odendal. 2023: Hiking guide training course by Dries Steyn, Venture Forth: qualified to guide throughout South Africa, on trail day hiking below 2400 metres above sea level, staying overnight in hiking huts. Member of the Cape Tourist Guides Association since 2000. Regularly attend meetings, talks, outings & educationals for professional enrichment, through the Cape Tourist Guides Association, Culture Connect, Cape Town Heritage Foundation, and the Winter Lecture Series. Guide accreditation, through the Guide Registrar, Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism, renewed every three years, requires First Aid Level 1 Certificate renewal. Professional Driver's Permit, renewed every two years, requires Police clearance and medical certificate. Licensed to guide in 5 of South Africa's 9 provinces: The Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Gauteng and North West.

Overview of your Cape Town tour

Our most famous attraction, the Table Mountain cable car, is weather dependent, so we'll start there if it's open! If not, visit Signal Hill instead. Drive through the city to view historic sites like the Castle of Good Hope & City Hall. Some areas are best explored on foot, like the Company's Garden where the Dutch East India Company planted fruit & vegetables to supply its ships sailing east on the spice route from 1652. The South African Museum & Planetarium, Synagogue & Jewish Museum, National Gallery, Parliament, Slave Lodge Museum and St. Georges Anglican Cathedral are all located around the edge of the garden. The historic BoKaap, famous for its colourful houses, is also fun to explore on foot. The District Six Museum tells the story of apartheid displacememt. There are many good quality shops, galleries and coffee shops. We can also visit Camp's Bay & Clifton beaches, the Sea Point promenade, or the V&A Waterfront.

Craig demonstrated to my wife and I why his 5-star rating is completely justified. He provided an exceptional half-day experience for us especially at the cruise port and Table Mountain. He was recognized at both locations by many of the onsite workers. This comes from 27 years of experience in the business. He was able to arrange to have our three suitcases stored at the cruise terminal where no such public storage facility is available. He knew how to navigate the lines at Table Mountain to shorten our wait time (my wife has mobility issues following her recent recovery from cancer treatment). After I did a 'faceplant' at Table Mountain after misjudging a curb step down as we were on our way to the shuttle bus to the parking lot, he adapted our remaining time to limit walking yet still see many of the sights. I had very minor injuries--bruises and scrapes, but no bleeding, torn clothing, or broken bones. He dropped us off at the airport hotel so that we could 'freshen up' before our flight back to the USA that night. When in Cape Town, you must trip Nando's--a South Africa fast food restaurant. His extensive knowledge of the area provided an outstanding experience from atop Table Mountain. While I thought that this might be our only trip to Cape Town, Craig piqued my interest to return for a weeklong stay in the future. There is THAT MUCH to see and do. I never knew.

Craig was outstanding, picked us up on time in his beautiful minivan, showed us the delights of Table Mountain and the highlights of Cape Town. Craig is incredibly knowledgeable, kind and friendly - he went above and beyond our expectations.

We had the most fabulous introduction to Cape Town on this tour with Craig, and highly recommend anyone new to the city to do this. Craig is an excellent communicator, reaching out via message to ensure we were ready for the day; offering to tailor the trip to our interests, and readily available for any questions. The blurb for this tour was informative so I knew the main highlights we wanted to see would be covered - and it was organised so well to maximise this time while explaining the many notable sights and political intricacies of the place. Craig was highly knowledgeable, organised, efficient, approachable and patient with our family of 4 and our unique needs. He also thought of special options we might like such as the Sunday market which we added in to our day. We had an exceptional visit. Thank you Craig!

Craig is a knowledgeable and outstanding tour guide! We had an excellent tour with Craig. His knowledge of the flora and fauna on Table Mountain made our experience so much more meaningful. He was also very helpful in advance of our travels to ensure we made the most of our trip by recommending to get the tickets in advance. We even had time to visit the Oranjezicht City Farm Market in Cape Town for a bit of lunch and to walk around the market. It was a wonderful half-day tour with Craig!!

We really enjoyed the Cape Town City Tour with Craig. It was an excellent way to get acquainted with the city, and Craig was very knowledgeable of the city's history. We also lucked out on the weather, and made it to the top of Table Mountain. Lastly, Craig gave us ideas of other places to visit on our own.

Your Cape Town tour itinerary

Table Mountain by cable car should be done first, if it's open, because it's weather-dependent and can close any time due to wind. Spend 45 minutes or longer on top, walking around and enjoying the sensational views. If we can't go up, we'll drive to Signal Hill for the next best views over the city. We usually fill 4 - 5 hours easily with Table Mountain + some driving and walking (Company's Garden & BoKaap), without museum visits, but we can fit one in if there's an interest. Options include the South African Museum & Planetarium, Jewish Museum, National Gallery, Slave Lodge Museum, District Six Museum and Castle of Good Hope. There are also shopping opportunities: Jewellery, African artefacts, ostrich and other exotic leather goods, the informal fleamarket on Greenmarket Square and the high quality Watershed craft market at the V&Waterfront. On weekends, farmers markets are open for a fun local experience, selling clothing, craft & design, and food: gourmet products, snacks & meals.
