Herculaneum is smaller than Pompeii, but remarkably well preserved. The volcanic material that buried the town protected details of everyday life that are rarely preserved at other Roman archaeological sites, including wooden architectural elements and organic remains. On this private walking tour, we explore houses, shops, baths and the waterfront area, using what survives to understand the people who once lived here. You will see richly decorated homes, mosaics, wooden details and everyday spaces that reveal the lives of merchants, craftsmen, freedmen and families who made Herculaneum their home. We also look at the evidence preserved from the final hours of the city and at selected objects recovered during archaeological excavations, connecting what we see in the ruins with the human stories behind them. The pace is private and flexible, allowing time to stop, look closely and explore the details that interest you most. Herculaneum offers a different and unusually intimate glimpse into Roman daily life.
Vincenzo is a knowledgeable and experienced guide. He did an exceptional job with communication and organization for us before the trip, arranging transportation and a very special lunch of local food at an agriturismo. The tour itself was excellent. Vincenzo has a deep knowledge of history and archaeology and we enjoyed the intimacy and refinement of Herculaneum more than Pompeii which is very crowded.
I can't speak highly enough about Vincenzo! Communication was clear and he did a great job personalizing the tour for our group. He was also exceptionally understanding when we needed to adjust timing. As for the tour itself, it was exactly what we asked for! We had asked him to shorten the tour because we didn't have enough time and he hit as many of the big sites as he could and was so engaging that it turned out to be the favorite tour of the person in our group that was convinced he wasn't even interested in Herculaneum! His knowledge and clear communication were fantastic. You won't regret a tour with Vincenzo!
