The Hohenzollern was Prussia's ruling dynasty ever since it turned from duchy to kingdom in 1701. Unlike their French counterparts, the Prussian kings were always slightly short of cash, which sometimes is reflected in the respective buildings. However, there was one king, Frederick The Great, who ruled Prussia from 1740 to 1786, who did indeed have a vision, and who most definitely left his mark on the city. Under his reign, some buildings were created which mark Berlin and its surroundings to this day, among them the State Opera (at the time Europe's largest), and, of course, Sans Souci Palace. But there is a lot more. For instance, Gendarmenmarkt, the Prince Heinrich Palais (today: Humboldt University), the old State Library, etc. that make this tour more than worth your while! Join me on this tour and get to hear about the buildings' turbulent history over time, how they survived several wars and regimes, and what these fabulous monuments mean for Berlin today!
- We will start by discovering Gendarmenmarkt, considered to be one of Berlin's most extravagant squares. Learn about, Jäger Strasse, which once was the domain of the formidable Mendelssohn family, having owned three buildings on this street which is full of history since it was also the home of Rahel Varnhagen, one of Berlin's foremost 18th century (Jewish) salonnieres, whose Literary Salons were attended by anyone who was someone at the time. - Admire Hausvogteiplatz, a square also steeped in history. There, I'll explain its significance to Berlin's garment industry, before we reach Bebelplatz with its wide range of palaces and memorials (former State Library, State Opera, Book Burning Memorial, Hotel de Rome, Altes Palais). - Next, discover K. F. Schinkel's Neue Wache before we move on to the 17th century Zeughaus building. After exploring Museum Island, our tour ends at the Humboldt Forum. I am more than willing to customize this tour according to your preference. Feel free to contact me for details!
