Explore Tallinn your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Tallinn tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Tallinn for every interest, including:

History tours: Climb Hellemann Tower and walk the medieval city wall, then explore Kiek in de Kök and the Bastion Passages with stories of sieges and secret tunnels. Your guide can also include the former KGB prison cells on Pagari Street or the Hotel Viru KGB museum for Cold War history, and a stop at the Great Guild Hall.

Layover tours: With TLL only minutes from the centre, meet at arrivals and do a compact Old Town loop to Town Hall Square, St. Catherine’s Passage and Kohtuotsa viewpoint, plus a coffee and marzipan stop at Maiasmokk Café, before returning to the airport on schedule. If you prefer transit, your guide can ride tram 4 with you to and from the airport, keeping timing tight.

Religious Sites tours: Step inside Alexander Nevsky Cathedral for icons and choral music, then visit St. Olaf’s Church and, in season, climb the tower for Gulf of Finland views. Add Niguliste Museum at St. Nicholas’ Church to see medieval altarpieces and the Danse Macabre, and the quiet Dominican Monastery Claustrum for a contrasting cloister.

The Old Town is very walkable and trams and buses are reliable; for winter conditions, mobility needs or quicker trips to places like Kadriorg or Pirita, ask your local guide about a chauffeured tour or private transportation.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Tallinn inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Tallinn

Base yourself in Tallinn, then use Tallinn day trips to reach coastal cliffs, manor parks, small towns, and waterfalls on your tour without rushing back late.

Lahemaa National Park: Walk bog boardwalks, visit manor houses like Palmse and Sagadi, and stop in fishing villages, a good blend if you enjoy light hiking, nature, and local stories, with easy routes that work well in any season.

Paldiski and the Pakri cliffs: Stand on tall limestone edges, climb the lighthouse, and trace Cold War-era sites around the harbour, which fits geology fans and curious photographers, and wind-swept coastal roads keep the drive interesting.

Jägala Waterfall and Rebala area: See Estonia’s widest waterfall up close, then add ancient stone graves or village stops nearby, perfect if you want a short, low-effort outing with strong scenery, and it pairs neatly with a seaside lunch.

Haapsalu: Stroll wooden houses, the medieval castle grounds, and a calm promenade, a soft-paced day for architecture and spa-town history, and the compact centre lets you cover a lot without clock-watching.

Rakvere: Climb the hilltop castle for hands-on exhibits and views, then wander the small town core, which suits families and medieval history fans, and straightforward roads mean more time on foot than in the car.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Tallinn most travellers miss.
