Welcome to Split, Dalmatia! I hope that, as your hostess, I will make your visit to Dalmatia as memorable and exciting as possible. My name is Nives and I have been a tour guide for more than 20 years. With a Bachelor's degree in Classical Studies and Master's Degree in Modern Greek Language, my academic interests lie primarily in history, archaeology and history of art. So my incessant curiosity propelled me to travel extensively all over the world, both in professional capacity and as a travel enthusiast keen to acquire in-depth knowledge of the local culture. But my heart is set on the Mediterranean basin, so I feel privileged to be a licensed guide for the region of Central Dalmatia which epitomizes the very essence of the Mediterranean culture. Thus I can share my passion for the local historic and cultural heritage, enthusiasm for the local laid-back rhythm of life and addiction to the local edible and potable delicacies. Namely, no visit to any place is complete without indulging in traditional cuisine and imbibing local wines. As a foodie and wine enthusiast myself, I particularly enjoy doing food and wine tours around the Dalmatian region which has finally come on the radar of international wine connoisseurs and winemakers. I have even provided the tours for professionals in the field such as winemakers from Oregon, State of Washington and especially California, including the Zinfandel Advocates and Producers. I also have extensive experience in translating and interpreting practice from both English and Modern Greek to Croatian. In this capacity I worked for the Press Office of the Greek Embassy in Zagreb and also for the President of the Republic of Croatia. Furthermore, I have contributed to a number of projects in the fields of culture and publishing. All the tours I provide can be adjusted to your needs and interests. I really do feel as an ambassador to my country, so I would love you to leave my country with the best of memories and with a strong desire to come back again. Dalmatia is such a rich and complex region in every single aspect, so let me accompany you in untangling its many mysteries! -Bachelor's degree in Classical Studies, University of Zagreb, 1997 -Master's Degree in Modern Greek Language, University of Patras, 1999 -Degree in Tourist Destination Management, University of Management and Design Aspira, Split, 2014 -Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), 2001 -Licensed tour guide for Split-Dalmatia County, 2013 -Licensed tour guide for Sibenik-Knin County, 2015 -Roman Architecture, Yale University, 2020 (online non-credit course offered through Coursera) -Over 20 years of experience in tourism industry I am a licensed guide and have no restrictions.

Overview of your Split tour

The Diocletian's Palace became over centuries not just home to local citizens, but also to a vibrant Jewish community who first settled in this area in the ancient times. This is the feature thanks to which this Roman monument stands out among some many others as, apart from being so well preserved, it is a hodgepodge of every possible historic and architectural style with different cultural influences. Thus vestiges of medieval Jewish worshipers can be found incised into the walls of the substructure of the Roman palace, whereas the Aron Hakodesh is built into its western wall. The whole Jewish ghetto was situated within the perimeter of the original palace. The synagogue is the third oldest Jewish temple in Europe still serving a small, but active local Jewish community. Here I will introduce you to my dear friend Albert who is the shamash. He will share with you his personal narratives. The Jewish cemetery lies on the slope on the Marjan hill and occupies one of the most beautiful spots in town.

Your Split tour itinerary

The tour can be customized to your needs, interests, activity level and time that you have at your disposal. Here you will find a general overview: - Diocletian's Palace with the Substructure where menorahs are carved into the walls - Mausoleum of the Emperor (now Cathedral), Temple of Jupiter - main Roman square Peristyle Then we will explore the rest of the medieval and modern town which is nested within the original Roman palace: - Golden Gate with the Statue of Gregory of Nin - Pjaca square - Fruit square - Jewish Ghetto with the Synagogue (Note: the synagogue closes on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Most of the time, however, I can arrange for it to be opened. ) At the end we will take a 15-minute walk up the Marjan hill where you can visit the old Jewish cemetery from 1573. As it is a longer tour, a coffee/snack break can be taken at any point of the tour.
