As someone who loves to escape the crowds and find strange things, I invite you to discover another Bruges when the city was a member of the powerfull trading association : "THE HANSEATIC LEAGUE". The Hanseatic League was the grouping of the main trading cities of the North Sea during the Middle Ages. This guild with privileges cooperated until the 17th century and controlled the maritime trade from the Baltic to the North Sea. Bruges off the beaten track is an encounter with local life in the 15th century when the city was the international port of Europe. It also means understanding the evolution of the city, the lives of important notables who have contributed to the development of the city.
The district of the lodges (this is also the name by which the Hanseatic district is known) roughly follows the Reie Canal, a maritime route that was once used for the delivery and shipment of goods. *Place Jan-Van-Eyck, in the middle of the old port center with the old Tonlieu, the Portefaix and Bourgeois lodges; *Place des Orientaux (Austrian Square) which sheltered the German Hanseatic League; *Quai du Miroir (Mirror quay) ; *Quai espagnol (Spanish quay) and rue des espagnols (Spanish street); *Quai de la Main-d'Or (Golden hand quay) ; *Rue des Flamands, a very important commercial street with the Genoese Lodge; *Saint Walburga's Church; *Church of Saint-Gilles ;
