I am fascinated by the multicultural history of Flanders' cities & beyond. My aim as a local guide is to provide you with a personal and professional service: not only to tell you the history, but also to show you these cities of today. I studied economics & public relations at the Artevelde Hogeschool Ghent and by ending up in the travel industry, I took the opportunity to travel all continents. After my active career I took a course of general history and guided different parties in Ghent, Bruges, Antwerp and Brussels. With pleasure I share my experience and knowledge with interested travelers from all over the world for whom I put my best foot forward. "You are a bridge-builder between diverse people", that's how a friend-writer once told me. I believe this is an appropriate description of myself, because looking for beauty in people, architecture, culture and music is my passion. Being on the road I find more interesting than the end goal itself. As the famous scientist Einstein ever pretended: "logic takes you from A to B, imagination takes you everywhere". *studied economics & history *experienced traveler & touroperator *multiple language skills *highly empathic ability *open minded Recommended to travel by train in Belgium: no traffic jams, no reservations needed, high frequencies, very affordable. For your extra comfort, consider buying a 1st class ticket. On weekends travel at half price. Reduced price if you're 65+

Overview of your Bruges tour

Bruges is one of the famous medieval Flemish cities, also called 'The Venice of the North' since international tourism emerged in the 19th century. Till around 1500 Bruges had a direct access to the North Sea which allowed busy shipping to dock in Damme, the port just outside Bruges. From here small boats transported goods from all over the world into the heart of Bruges and stocked it in the Waterhall. Bruges became an important and successful Hanseatic city, connected with other Hanseatic cities in Italy, England, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Russia. International trade & commerce became Bruges' core business as a result, and so Bruges became a sophisticated city with an exceptional well preserved architecture and culture, generating a growing number of visitors from all over the world until today.

Bruges is a place that feels preserved, not manufactured—and our tour with Dirk at Heart of Bruges made that come alive in a way we won’t forget. From the start, Dirk set the tone with a calm confidence and deep knowledge of the city. He didn’t just recite history—he told stories. Stories of trade, faith, resilience, and everyday life that shaped Bruges into what it is today. You begin to see why Bruges is considered one of the great medieval Flemish cities, and why it earned the name “Venice of the North.” What stood out most was Dirk’s ability to connect the past to the present. The canals, the architecture, the quiet corners—they all took on meaning. He made the city feel personal, not just picturesque. The pacing was excellent. We never felt rushed, and there was space to take it in, ask questions, and simply enjoy being there. You could tell this wasn’t a script—it was a passion. If you’re visiting Bruges and want more than just a walk through a beautiful city—if you want to understand it—this tour is worth your time. A memorable experience, led by someone who clearly loves what he does.

Dirk-Diego gave us an excellent walking tour of Bruges. He met us promptly at our hotel and led us through the historic areas with ease and expertise. He took time to answer all our questions and paced the tour accordingly. We ended up seeing and learning so much more about Bruges than if we had been on our own. I would absolutely recommend taking Dirk-Diego's walking tour of Bruges. It was a highlight of our visit to Bruges.

Very nice tour for the six of us with Dirk. We walked all around the town, focusing on history, local culture, and food opportunities. Dirk was very pleasant throughout, taking pictures of us at times, giving us info on good places to eat, and providing very thoughtful and thorough historical descriptions. We all enjoyed Dirk’s local knowledge and friendly spirit. We highly recommend him.

Dirk was excellent. See my other review for Ghent. We did Brugges and Ghent with him on the same day. He helped organize both and did a great job
