Hi, My name is Jan. I was born and raised in the Bruges region to an American mother. I grew up with the best of both worlds on each side of the Atlantic. I started guiding at a very young age. As I started to assume the role of the 'family historian', I was expected to show visiting family from the US around my medieval hometown, all the while connecting the local history to the world stage. From there, my passion grew and guiding took on a life of itself. I've been guiding at a professional level for almost 9 years, having completed a 3-year guiding course to become an 'official' (licensed) city guide along the way. Through the years I've become an 'all-rounder' on each of my tours ranging from diving into history and art history; to showing our culinary/food culture (beer, waffles; chocolate and local dishes), to exposing the medieval origin of common English words, to sharing popular anecdotes, all explained with a humorous twist. I look forward to showing you around my hometown. - Bachelor Degree - Major in Political and Social Sciences; Minor in History - Masters Degree - Latin American Studies - Official Guide of Bruges Diploma/License - EHBO (First Aid for Accidents) - Certificate - Driver's license since 2006. I have my own sedan car.

Overview of your Bruges tour

This tour brings us through the bustling south-side of medieval Bruges, where besides covering the main highlights it has to offer, we'll explore the fascinating history of the town. We'll encompass several different eras, from its humble beginnings in the 9th century through to the Golden Burgundian Age in the 15th century to its rediscovery in the 19th century. Besides the historical background, I'll make sure you dive into Flemish/Belgian culture & art history with me, as I provide local insights and popular anecdotes on how it is to experience growing up/living in this UNESCO World Heritage Site today. 'Never a dull moment'- guaranteed. Not to mention, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy some chocolate tasting! You can also opt to see the 'Madonna and Child' statue by Michelangelo inside the Church of our Lady or go inside the Groeninghe Museum to admire the 'Flemish Primitives' paintings, both for an extra expense.

We were in Bruges for a family wedding and booked Jan’s Golden Triangle Tour — and what a gem of a guide! My 92-year-old mom can’t walk long distances, so we brought her transport chair. Jan immediately (and cheerfully) insisted on wheeling mom himself, narrating Bruges’ history while expertly navigating cobblestone streets like a local hero. He’s smart, personable, and endlessly patient — even modified his usual route to find the smoothest streets to keep mom's jostling to a minimum. We learned a ton, got lots of photos (and chocolate souvenirs), and came away with wonderful memories. I was especially pleased how much mom enjoyed the tour! Highly recommend Jan to anyone wanting a brilliant, personalized look at Bruges!

Jan was the consummate travel guide. He was very knowledgeable about the history, culture and architecture of Brigges. I have been to Bruges before but never had the chance to join a tour. Jan showed us beautiful and historical places we would otherwise never see. His love and pride for Brugge is palpable.

Jan is an excellent guide. We thoroughly enjoyed our morning spent with Jan. He organized the tour well, kept us engaged and had so much local insight. He offered recommendations of places we could revisit more in depth after the tour. What a pleasure to meet and learn from Jan about Bruges.

This was such a great tour because we got a real sense of the history of Brugges. Jan is so vibrant in his relating of the past and present city. His knowledge is extensive. He never tires of answering questions. He made great recommendations for food, drink and chocolate. His stories are very entertaining and he brings the major characters in Brugges history to life with pictures and vignettes. Don’t miss his tour if you are in the city you will come away with a new appreciation for the circumstances driving the past/current state of the city.

Jan is fantastic— he is very knowledgeable and very very kind! We are a family with 3 young girls (9, 6 and 5) and made the trip though Bruges so fun. We couldn’t recommend this tour enough!
