500 years of reformation
Martin Luther's main place of work was Wittenberg, a today well restored little town apprx. 70 miles southwest of Berlin. From here spread out his new ideas of faith focusing on the lecture of the bible, opposing the priest's role as the intermediator between human beings and God and rejecting the selling of indulgences. Scriptura, fide, gratia was the new motto.
We will visit the renowned places of his life: the Augustinians monastery turned into his home and students hostel, the church where he preached regularly and the Palace Church where the 95 theses where nailed on the door as the saying goes.
With the help of the new communication technology, printing, and influential protectors and supporters like the elector of Saxony, John Frederic the Wise, the philosopher Philipp Melanchthon, the painter Lukas Cranach and many others his ideas developed to one of the most important denominations of Christianity.
After a 1, 5 - 2 hours drive from Berlin we will be in the historical city center of Wittenberg, mainly a pedestrian zone today.
We'll visit the Palace Church, where Luther is buried, and we'll see the bronze door with his 95 theses. Passing the Market square with the Luther Monument we reach the St. Marien Church with the famous altarpiece by Lukas Cranach. We can also have a look into the house of this famous entrepreneur- painter.
In march 2017 Luther's House will reopen. We can visit this former monastery changed into his private home where his famous table talks took place and where his wife Katharina von Bora managed not only the family's household but also a hostel for apprx. 30 students and short-term guests of the reformer.
An outstanding visual experience is the 360 degree Panorama of Wittenberg painted by Yadegar Asisi. You can dip into Luther's neighbourhood meeting the reformer himself, his wife, friends and ordinary people of the town in early 16th century.
