Dear Traveler, "Ich bin ein Berliner!" John F. Kennedy's famous words doubtless apply to me. I was born in West-Berlin's American Sector in February 1971, and I grew up in the British Sector. In the French Sector, I went to school, and, moreover, political developments after the Berlin Wall was built forced parts of my family to live in East-Berlin. To see them, we had to cross the border, which I did many times until the Wall fell in 1989. From 1991 to 2015, I served in the German Air Force. Therefore, my tours focus on Germany's, Prussia's, and Berlin's history, politics and politico-military affairs. I would be more than happy to provide a broad spectrum of information about Germany's military from 1640 until today. I began to provide Berlin tours in 2001. It started with military colleagues and friends. Since 2015, I have been working as a professional tour guide. Since both cities' history is strongly connected, I am also offering tours in Potsdam. You will be truly impressed by spending some hours in this beautiful city. Potsdam is much more than the two world-famous palaces Sanssouci and Cecilienhof (Potsdam Conference 1945). Also impressive is the Bridge of Spies (Glienicker Brücke), which connects Berlin and Potsdam. My understanding of being a professional ToursByLocals guide is that I am doubtless willing and capable to offer a comprehensive service. As a matter of course, I can arrange your visit of museums, shows, and other events. Please, do not hesitate to ask for recommendations for restaurants, coffee houses, bars, etc. If you have special wishes or "must sees", just let me know them, please. I will create an individual tour tailored to the "mission". Sincerely, Alexander I finished two university degrees: one German degree in educational science (University of the Federal Armed Forces, Hamburg) as well as a U.S. MA in Security Studies (Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA). In my master thesis, I analysed the end of the Republic of Weimar and Hitler's way to power in the early 1930s. During my military career, I also joined the German General Staff Training. Moreover, I wrote several research papers about transatlantic security.

Overview of your Berlin tour

There is probably no other city in the world, which allows visitors to see so many different "scars of history" like Berlin does. To best possible understand the German capital, it is essential to discuss the historical developments after the Thirty Years War, when Prussia was founded and later became a great European power. We will see important places and buildings of Prussia and Imperial Germany. Moreover, I will discuss the developments from the Great War until 1933, when Hitler took power. The National Socialists significantly influenced Berlin's structure and architecture, and we will see some important examples. Places, where Hitler's horrible plans to execute warfighting and the Holocaust, are also important parts of the tour. Eventually, you will get comprehensive background information about the Cold War period and the Communist dictatorship that was implemented by the Soviet Union after World War II. A perfect tour for travelers who are intested in history and political-military affairs.

Alex did a great job in several ways. First, we told him about some sites we saw the previous day which were likely on his tour. Within literally seconds, he figured out alternatives so we did not see the same thing twice. Second, he was very knowledgeable and gave great explanations regarding the sites he took us to. Finally, although we probably got too much excercise on the walking tour, he took us on public transit when the distances were too far. It was fun going on public transit.

Alex was awesome! This tour was an absolute must for those seeking a guided history tour of Berlin. Alex knowledge and delivery of the subject matter was spot one. We covered a lot of ground and detail in the 4 hours....it provided a solid foundation of Berlin for our next days walking the city. My advice is schedule Alex on day 1 of your Berlin trip.
