Beginning near historic Portsmouth Square, we will follow lively streets and quieter lanes while discussing immigration, community, food traditions, architecture, literature and the people who shaped this part of the city. Possible stops include neighborhood temples or markets, Washington Square, Beat-era landmarks and nearby waterfront views. A typical route includes: - Meet at Portsmouth Square in Chinatown - Grant Avenue and selected side streets - A market, bakery or tea-shop area - The historic boundary between Chinatown and North Beach - Jack Kerouac Alley and Beat-era landmarks - Washington Square and Saints Peter and Paul Church exterior - North Beach cafes and local institutions - Finish near Washington Square or continue to the waterfront, depending on pace Expect approximately 2 to 2.5 miles of walking.
