Looking to get away without getting on a plane? Join me for a private walking tour of NYC's Little Ireland in Woodlawn in the Bronx, near Woodlawn Cemetery. I grew up near Woodlawn and spent lot of time there Woodlawn which sits at the border of Yonkers and the Bronx and has been home for generations of Irish-Americans as well as Irish Immigrants. Katonah Ave. and crossing McLean Ave. into Yonkers you will see the presence of the Irish Community on both Avenues. Woodlawn was such a destination for Irish immigrants that there are two Irish Immigration and Community Centers. Both are sources for existing and new Irish immigrants to Woodlawn and the US. Looking for that Irish Sweater? Bangers & Mash? Smoky Bacon Crisps? Traditional Irish Music? Irish Breakfast? I will show you where to find them in Little Ireland. As well as my favorite places for music and food. Woodlawn Cemetery is the 2nd top place to visit in the Bronx so we will take a glimpse at that and its Irish members.
We will explore: *Katonah Avenue shops, pub, Public Library with an extensive collection of Irish books. - shopping, discussion background on shops, pubs. Go inside Library dependent on hours. *Local 147 Tunnel Workers Sandhogs building - sight *McLean Ave. shops, pubs, restaurants, discussed the history of St. Patrick's Parade - shopping, break to get a drink or food. *St. Barnabas Church - sight discuss background on the church. Go inside if possible. *The Emerald Isle Immigration Center - go inside if open. Discuss the importance/history of the Center. *Aisling Irish Community Center - go inside Aisling if open. Discuss contribution to the community. *Woodlawn Cemetery as time allows - history, background. Opportunity to walk around and explore.
