Hi, I'm Ann M. , a native of Brooklyn and now a licensed New York City tour guide. Having spent my entire working career in the offices of Manhattan, there isn't a nook or cranny of NYC I'm not familiar with. So let me show you this amazing and fascinating town, especially via our wonderful subways, busses, ferries, and cable car! My mother came here from Scotland and my dad was a first generation New Yorker, born in Greenwich Village as a child of Irish immigrants who worked on the waterfront. Around the corner was the home of our scandalous Mayor Jimmy Walker. Our family then moved to the other great West Side neighborhood, Chelsea, now famous as the setting of the High Line. So how did we end up in Brooklyn? Simple: the apartments were cheaper! I was raised there in Park Slope, and my backyard was Prospect Park, the sibling of Manhattan's Central Park. Brooklyn in the '60s and '70s was a great place to grow up, with pizza, parks, street games, and the johnny pump (a. k. a. fire hydrant) to cool off in on a sweltering day. It was a beautiful time because my life was full of music from the radio and the records, most of which were produced in the offices and studios of nearby Manhattan. That love of music coincided with the beginning of my work life, where I was lucky enough to have a career in and around the music and entertainment businesses. I have composed several specialty tours for you based on these experiences. These tours will show you the venues, and tell you the inside stories, of your favorite musicians and the people who made them famous. Additionally, I can customize your New York experience to match your tastes and interests. So if you want to see Times Square, the Brooklyn Bridge, Rockefeller Center, Wall Street and the Stock Exchange, we can go there and then have pizza in Little Italy, or wonton soup in Chinatown, or pickles on the Lower East Side. Overview of your New York City tour
The Dutch were the original European settlers of the Island of Manhattan. Our culture and indeed the culture of America owes a great debt to the foundation laid by our forebearers from the Netherlands! Learn the history and hear the stories of the original families who came here for various reasons and whose impact and economic power is still felt today in New York City. We'll walk the original streets, the shoreline site of the old Dutch canal on Broad Street. We'll see archeological treasures that have been found in the building of the modern city. You'll learn about the legacy the Dutch left behind and some of the foods we enjoy.
Your New York City tour itinerary
Starting at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal on Whitehall Street, we'll visit: 1) Peter Minuet Plaza and see the bronze copy of the Castillo Map, as well as a memorial to the first Jewish settlers 2) Walking up State Street, we'll visit where the home of the original midwife in the colony was, whose daughters married five times and were responsible for a large portion of the population and wealth generated here 3) Visit the little known but very important original Dutch Street, Marketfeld Street 4) We'll visit the sites of: 1) the original wood church 2) the original City Hall 3) the original synagogue 4) the wall for which Wall Street is named 5) We'll discuss the origins of the names of some of Lower Manhattan's most famous streets, such as Maiden Lane and Gold Street 6) Visit the landmarked cast-iron building in which the Roosevelt family ran a successful men's clothing store. And several other fun and important spots, all within a convenient walking distance!
