Hello, welcome to Belfast! I am a former teacher of Irish literature and history, teaching at High School level and also lecturing at ICE - the Institute of Continuing Education - at Queen’s University Belfast in Irish Studies. I founded the ETAC project – Education Through Arts and Culture –placing artists, poets, writers, dancers, musicians and so forth in a number of schools; many as artists in residence. I have been involved in numerous cross-community projects- including Give & Take, a joint project under the auspices of Barnardos and local government. I also worked on a voluntary basis as a Youth Leader. As well as having lived in London in the late 60s, I have travelled extensively over the years, many as a solo traveller. The most recent was in 2023 when I, and a French friend, did a two-week road trip across Northern Europe. I have completed the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal: climbed Mount Fuji; white water rafting down the Urubamba River in Peru; climbed Mount Toubkal in Morocco and trekked the Sahara – with Berber tribesmen and accompanying mule train; stayed with the Uros Indians on the floating islands on Lake Titicaca; stayed in Japan and trained under the karate masters; studied yoga in Pondicherry, India; travelled by dug out canoe along the Mekong River in Vietnam; got lost in Hanoi; went on elephant back safari in Kerala; cut the lawns at the Taj Mahal on a buffalo driven mower. In total, at last count, forty nine countries – with more to come. I have also had the privilege of representing my country in a sporting capacity on countless occasions on the world stage. I have worked on many films/ TV dramas as a support actor including with Pierce Brosnan on The Last Rifleman ( he’s a gentleman); The School for Good and Evil for Netflix; numerous BBC & ITV dramas: most recenly as a nobleman in The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and all of series 7 Game of Thrones, where I was involved in transporting the cast and crew. As a professional guide, I have taken many people from across the globe on different tours around the province garnering 100s of 5* reviews in the process. I have conducted tours for, among others: the ERASMUS student exchange programme; the United Nations Australian delegation; staff from the American Embassy in London; the State Department Washington DC; Swiss Radio – who recorded and aired my tour and the Seatle Times, who published a glowing review of my tour. My goal, on my tours, is to involve my guests in an unforgettable experience which will last with them long after they have returned home.

Overview of your Belfast tour

I was born and raised on the Falls Road in West Belfast, at the heart of the recent Troubles. This immersive Belfast Troubles tour offers a rare and powerful experience, providing a first hand, eye witness account to the conflict from a local guide who lived through the era. Join me for an authentic and moving journey through the city's complex past. This is not a history lesson: it's a chance to hear personal stories and gain an understanding of the deep-seated issues that have divided our people for centuries. I will share my own experiences gained over many years in this town and provide a unique perspective on the conflict, offering you insights you won't find in any history book: but stories bringing the turbulent history of the time to life. Why has there been 100’s of years of fighting in Ireland? Why did the 'Troubles' start? What’s next? I encourage questions and debate on this thought provoking and at times emotional tour which will remain with you long after you have returned home.

If you want an authentic experience this is it! Martin is wise and will show you and teach you things that you can’t learn in a textbook or in videos. He says things that stick with you and make you think. I would love to come back to Belfast just to have dinner with Martin and learn more from him… 3 hours is just not enough time and it went by too quick but it is an amazing tour and one I highly recommend!!

My wife and I absolutely cannot say in adequate words just how well Martin does his tours. We learned so much. We saw so much. It was humbling to be immersed in the stories and history. Without any hesitation, we highly recommend booking a tour with Martin. No matter what he would teach you about……. He is such a kind, warm, learned person. Such a gentlemen. Martin, thank you. You made our trip across the pond so much more memorable. You’re a gem. Keep shining. Michael and Kathy

Wow, this was an incredible experience! We grew up in the '80s and knew about the Troubles, but really didn't understand them at all. Martin lived it. He takes you to the hot spots in Belfast and shows you pictures of what the area you're standing in looked like after a bombing, etc. Then you walk all over the battleground sites and also view the (still existing) walls that separate the Catholic and Protestant neighbourhoods. Wow, so real. It took me several days to process everything and write this review. It was a very emotional experience; we're better for having done the tour. I don't generally write glowing reviews, so know that my praise is legit. If you're interested in the Troubles, Martin is your guy.
