Walk with me and ex-prisoners through the side streets of working-class Belfast where history was made. You will talk to ex-prisoners, both Loyalist and Republican, and see the political murals that have been painted on the gable walls of both communities. Such an AMAZING tour! I grew up during "The Troubles" and booked this tour because I wanted to meet the veterans that experienced it before they're gone-Gerard provided context, geography, introductions and a bit of homework-�� all was impeccably done and my whole family loved it. This political tour was an incredible experience which far exceeded any expectations we had. Gerard was a terrific guide and he provided a very comprehensive account of the Troubles in Belfast, including showing us numerous sites associated with the conflict and sharing his personal experiences of life during the conflict. And the opportunity to walk with three former prisoners (one loyalist and two IRA) was both unique and very moving. Gerard, and this tour, have our highest recommendation.
This tour provided my group of visitors from America a firsthand look at the Troubles and their impact on the people of Belfast. Gerard and his coworker Joel gave expert, firsthand commentary as only eyewitnesses and participants can-our group of teachers and their family members had an experience they will never forget. The first stop will be the Catholic Falls Road to meet ex-prisoners involved in the conflict. (1) The political murals painted on the gable walls will be explained to you. (2) We will walk to the conflict museum (open 10am-1pm, Tuesday to Saturday) to see 800 years of Irish/British history. This museum was created by the local Republican community. (3) The tour will continue through the side streets of Belfast where you will view RPG and bullet holes from The Troubles. (4) We will visit the graves of Bobby Sands MP, fellow IRA men and women, and the other hunger strikers. (5) The tour will be guided by an ex-Loyalist prisoner who will talk about Loyalism and the heart of Loyalism, the Shankill Road.
