Wherever you go in the world there are some must-see sights and symbols of the cities. Istanbul's Sultanahmet area is this kind of sight. If you don't see the centre of the old Constantinople, you cannot say that you have been to Istanbul. This part is full of history; we start from the ancient Greek city Byzantium, then the Roman capital Nova Roma and later Constantinople. Constantinople came to be known for prestigious titles such as Basilevousa (Queen of Cities). After its conquest by the Ottoman Empire, this important city becomes the capital city of this Empire with the name Konstantiniyye. Today, Istanbul… Having been built at a major crossroads of land and sea trade routes it's full of different colors and a great mixture of cultures and religions. Napoleon Bonaparte is quoted as saying, "If the Earth were a single state, Constantinople would be its capital. '' As a big history lover and story-teller, I recommend you to see my hometown through my eyes.
-Blue Mosque ( Sultanahmet Mosque) (open every day except Friday mornings). -Roman Hippodrome where the chariot races were held in Roman times. -Hagia Sophia Mosque (built in the 6th century, largest Christian church for 1000 years, turned into a mosque, then a museum and now mosque again. Hagia Sophia was chosen a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1985) -Topkapı Palace Museum and Harem Museum (A palace complex that served as the administrative center and residence of the imperial Ottoman court from about 1478 to 1856)(Closed on Tuesdays). -Hagia Irini, Roman church built in 532 -Basilica Cistern (There are 158 underground cisterns in the old Constantinople. This large underground cistern built by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I (527-565) is one of the most impressive monuments of Istanbul). This is a suggested itinerary, let me know what you would like to see and do and I will customize the tour accordingly!
