Hi, I’m Steve (Sang Gil Lee), a licensed private guide and storyteller in Korea. I was born in the late 1950s, when South Korea was still recovering from the Korean War. I grew up watching the country transform from a struggling postwar society into the dynamic, modern Korea you see today. Later, as a young military officer, I served near the DMZ—the border that still symbolizes Korea’s division. So when I talk about modern Korean history, I’m not simply explaining something I learned from books. I lived through much of that transformation myself. My career has also given me a unique window into Korea’s cultural development. I worked as a television producer and later served as the CEO of a local government cultural agency. I also spent time in Los Angeles as a Visiting Scholar at UCLA and worked with international media professionals through NATPE. These experiences helped me understand both Korean and Western perspectives—and how differently visitors sometimes see Korea. But Korea is much more than its modern success story. As a graduate of Sungkyunkwan University, a university deeply rooted in Korea’s Confucian tradition, and a certified educator in Korean Buddhist temple culture, I enjoy explaining the ideas behind what you see: why Korean palaces were designed the way they were, how Confucianism shaped family and society, why Buddhism became such an important part of Korean culture, and how food, fermentation, markets, and everyday customs tell their own stories about Korean life. Most importantly, I believe a private tour should feel like a conversation, not a lecture. We can slow down, change our plans, stop for coffee or local food, and spend more time on the subjects that interest you. Whether we are standing at the DMZ, walking through a royal palace, visiting a Buddhist temple, or exploring a traditional market, I want you to leave with something more valuable than photographs. Overview of your Seoul tour
The DMZ is more than a border. It is the unfinished story of the Korean War. For me, that story is personal. I grew up in postwar Korea and later served as a military officer in the DMZ, when South Korea was very different from the country you see today. On this private tour, we'll visit the major DMZ sites, including the Third Infiltration Tunnel and Dora Observatory, while exploring the Korean War, national division, North Korea, and how Koreans today view reunification. This is not a history lecture. I welcome your questions and conversation, and I'll tailor the experience to your interests. My goal is not simply to show you the DMZ, but to help you understand the Korea behind the border.

Steve did a great tour for us--it was really convenient to be picked up and dropped off at our hotel since it was the second day of the trip. We appreciated Steve making all the arrangements for the DMZ bus tour and letting us know the quickest way to get into the tunnel. He made the process so easy and it was so interesting. He also was able to take us to a different vantage point since we asked to meet earlier than we originally planned (we were getting up earlier than we anticipated). He is very knowledgeable and willing to share his information!

What an amazing way to spend our layover in Korea! Our guide, Sang, picked us up from the airport and first took us to eat Korean bulgolgi for lunch. It was soooo good and we were able to try multiple Korean foods we had never tried before. After that we went to our DMZ tour, Sang was so informative and made sure we were always on time for everything. Loved the DMZ tour and especially loved having Sang as our personal guide, we definitely felt like we had vip treatment. Once the tour was over we were dropped back off to the airport with plenty of time for our flight. Highly recommend!

What an amazing tour!!! I traveled as a husband and wife with a 10 year old daughter. We had an amazing time. Our guide was very knowledgeable as well as accommodating. Steve educated us while at the same time ensuring we had lots of fun!! There were so many places we saw that were epic!! We have been using Tour by Locals for years and Steve had to be one of the BEST Tour Guides we have ever encountered. He was very sweet to my daughter explaining things simply yet engaging. Steve is also a great photographer providing us with many memorable photos. We felt very safe / relaxed in Steve 's hands as he met us at our Hotel in morning and dropped us back off in the evening after a full day of knowledge and fun!! - Hotel Pickup in Seoul - DMZ Tour After the entry procedures, we will use the official DMZ shuttle bus to visit: * Third Infiltration Tunnel — Walking into the tunnel is optional and physically demanding. (You are welcome to skip it if you prefer a more relaxed visit). * Dora Observatory — Look across the DMZ into North Korea and learn about the border, nearby villages, and life on both sides. * Unification Village - A small farming community where residents live and work just a few kilometers from the North Korean border. Return to Seoul 👉 DMZ tickets can be purchased at the ticket office on the day of the tour on a first-come, first-served basis. As the military limits the number of daily visitors, please note that access to the DMZ cannot be guaranteed. 👉 In the unlikely event that on-site ticketing is not available, we will have an alternative program including. “Odusan Unification Observatory- a viewpoint near the DMZ where you can find North Korea 2km across the river.
