Welcome to Dublin - Tá Fáilte Romhat. I'm John - an experienced tour guide and proud holder of the National Tour Guiding Badge. I have lived my whole life here, and I look forward to showing you the elegance, history and charm of Ireland's intriguing capital city. I have given to date over four hundred walking tours of Dublin to visitors from all parts of the world, and have an honours degree in languages (German and Russian) from Trinity College. Some of my extended family are however still native Irish speakers in the West of this country, so I am of course Irish to the core. Despite its location on the periphery of Europe, Dublin as a city boasts a remarkably diverse set of influences. The Celts arrived here a long time ago, followed by Vikings, Normans and English. Jewish people found a safe haven here from the pogroms of the Russian Empire; Huguenot Protestants came from France and Italians from the Lazio area settled here too. As we wend our way through the streets of Dublin I'll tell you about the city known to the Ancient Greeks as 'Eblana', which later became the bustling centre of 18th century Georgian grandeur and was ultimately the stage upon which the 'terrible beauty' of Irish independence was born in the 1916 Rising. Hear about the town that gave the world Swift, Beckett, Joyce and Behan - a place with a literary heritage second to none . . Dublin is also the home of modern writers such as Anne Enright and Roddy Doyle; and the city's rock exports such as U2, the Script, Hozier and Imelda May have become household names worldwide . . I look forward to unlocking for you some of the secrets, sights and stories of this fascinating city; and to sharing with you its humour and its history . . I have a Two-Subject (Hons.) Moderatorship in Modern Languages (Russian and German) from Trinity College Dublin I am not a driver. I can accompany you in your vehicle or I can arrange for a separate air-conditioned vehicle and driver. Please ensure to advise the full group number at time of booking. Guiding at a few locations, such as Trinity College, is restricted.

Situated just 20km from Dublin, the Hill of Howth seems a world away from the hustle and bustle of the Irish capital. With its storied past, wide open spaces and abundant marine life (porpoises, seals) Howth gives the impression more of a West of Ireland hideaway than of a ruralised stretch of Dublin's commuter belt. Boasting the best seafood eateries on the East Coast, intimate cafés and traditional pubs, the Peninsula is surrounded by stunning views - soaring cliffs, dense forests, and a real olde worlde harbor area more like a throwback to a bygone era. So join me on a hike around Dublin's best-kept secret (we get the H3 bus from town to the top of Howth Hill where we start the tour beside the Summit Inn - highest pub in Dublin), and view the city in the distance from Howth's lofty 200m peak. We'll then ramble along the cliffs to the screech of seagulls, taking in the fresh salty air before arriving two hours later into the old harbor to finish the day in one of its many bar-restaurants.
I can pick you up from your accommodation, provided it is reasonably central - or alternatively meet you at the Spire in O'Connell Street. We take the H3 bus from neaarby Abbey Street to the Summit Inn, at the top of Howth Hill Walk 200m from the final bus stop to Howth Summit: View Bailey Lighthouse Stroll along the Lower Cliff Hiking Path View Lambay Island, wildlife and nesting birds Arrive in Balscadden Rd - view Yeats Family Cottage Descend further into Howth Harbor Area Adjourn to a traditional pub or restaurant for a Hot Irish Coffee or Seafood Meal Stroll through Howth Market and along the East and West Piers Guests may at this point optionally spend the rest of the evening themselves in Howth sampling Irish Music in one of the pubs or return with me by bus / train / air-conditioned taxi to the city.
Tell your guide which places matter to you, skip what doesn't, and tailor the experience for your group's needs. Not finding what you want? Message your guide to build something unique.
For this tour we take the H3 bus from Abbey Street in the City Centre to the final stop opposite the Summit Inn at the top of Howth Hill. Our hike therefore commences from the top of the hill and is therefore a leisurely downhill stroll. Once we have toured the harbour area and availed of refreshments, we can take either the H3 bus, or the DART electric train back into the city.
