You want to know what it means to live in a dictatorship. As a West German, I experienced the harassment of crossing the border to visit relatives in the East. I know the stories of the dreary and fearful everyday life of my family from the East. Immerse yourself in this history with me on a 2. 5-hour walking tour along the remains of the Berlin Wall - the symbol of the dictatorship of the GDR. We start at the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse and end at an exhibition dedicated to everyday life in the former GDR. At the Berlin Wall Memorial you will experience the most significant and authentic remains of the Berlin Wall. Our tour starts in the Mitte district and takes you to the Prenzlauer Berg district. Why was the Wall built? What was the function of the Wall? Why did people risk their lives to cross the Wall from East to West? What were the reasons for leaving East Germany? What was everyday life like in East Germany? Which escapes from East Berlin were successful, which failed?
- We will meet at Nordbahnhof city train station and while walking through the grounds we will visit: - Nordbahnhof train station - Memorial of the victims of the Berlin Wall - Death strip with original remnants - The observation deck at the Documentation Center - Foundations of former apartment buildings - Representation of escape tunnels - Development of border fortifications - The Wall and the neighborhood - The Wall experienced from Berlin West - The Fall of the Wall - Museum at Kulturbrauerei The museum is open from Tues- Sunday. I will give you at least an introduction to the exhibition or depending on the resting time accompany you. The tour can be done every day of the week. But the above-mentioned museum, as well as the Visitors Center and the Documentation Center of the Berlin Wall Memorial, are closed on Monday. I am more than willing to customize this tour according to your preferences, please contact me for a customized tour.
