Dear Traveler, "Ich bin ein Berliner!" John F. Kennedy's famous words doubtless apply to me. I was born in West-Berlin's American Sector in February 1971, and I grew up in the British Sector. In the French Sector, I went to school, and, moreover, political developments after the Berlin Wall was built forced parts of my family to live in East-Berlin. To see them, we had to cross the border, which I did many times until the Wall fell in 1989. From 1991 to 2015, I served in the German Air Force. Therefore, my tours focus on Germany's, Prussia's, and Berlin's history, politics and politico-military affairs. I would be more than happy to provide a broad spectrum of information about Germany's military from 1640 until today. I began to provide Berlin tours in 2001. It started with military colleagues and friends. Since 2015, I have been working as a professional tour guide. Since both cities' history is strongly connected, I am also offering tours in Potsdam. You will be truly impressed by spending some hours in this beautiful city. Potsdam is much more than the two world-famous palaces Sanssouci and Cecilienhof (Potsdam Conference 1945). Also impressive is the Bridge of Spies (Glienicker Brücke), which connects Berlin and Potsdam. My understanding of being a professional ToursByLocals guide is that I am doubtless willing and capable to offer a comprehensive service. In my master thesis, I analysed the end of the Republic of Weimar and Hitler's way to power in the early 1930s. During my military career, I also joined the German General Staff Training. Moreover, I wrote several research papers about transatlantic security.

Are you interested in military affairs? If yes, I am the perfect tour guide for you. This tour offers a great overview of more than 300 years of military history in Prussia and Germany. Can you believe that the Berlin people had to deal with ten different armies that affected history and politics? This where Prussian Army, the Imperial German Army, the "Reichswehr" of the Weimar Republic, Hitler's Wehrmacht, the U.S. Army, the British Royal Army, the French Army, the Soviet Army, the East German National People's Army (NVA) and nowadays the German Federal Armed Forces. This history is unique in the world. You will get background information that "normal" tourists will never know about. For example, where the famous German General Staff used to have its headquarters, where many Prussian generals had their homes, and from what places the Nazi leaders governed Germany and executed their political decisions. The Cold War and the division of the city will also be a discussed.
This was a great tour. Alexander has a very in depth knowledge of the key Berlin sights and made sure we saw them all. In an 8 hour tour we covered what would have taken us perhaps a week on our own. Beyond the sights he was able to put what we were seeing in the context of the time. He was a friendly and enthusiastic guide!

We had an amazing tour with Alex in Berlin. He knew so much about the history and was very enthusiastic to share. We loved going around the city through public transport as well as part of the tour. What a great way to see the city. We had a fantastic lunch in beautiful setting. We had our 13 year old with us and Alex was great interacting with him as well. And also learning about Alex's own personal history living through the Berlin wall. Highly highly recommend Alex!

Alexander was a wonderful, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable tour guide! We spent 6 hours with him on a Berlin Military/History tour that he was able to customize to our teenage boys' interests. He brought in many topics to keep them engaged as we learned about Berlin's history. He relayed the wealth of information in an interesting and meaningful way.
