I'm an ex-pat American, a permanent resident of Croatia, and have lived in Split for 15 years. I created and published DiscoverSplit, the city's only free, English language annual newspaper for tourists which you can see online along with the Tourist Board of Split's newest publication, The Split Guide; DiscoverSplit's Restaurant Guide and the Split/Dalmatia Travel Guide. All of these are supported and approved by the Tourist Board of Split, whom I work with as a consultant. I also created the first and only walking map of all the streets and alleys within the actual Palace of Diocletian--which is part of the newspaper. Together with friends who own wineries, restaurants, honey farms and the best professional guides, I have created a suite of intriguing private tours that take you off-the-beaten-track to see places most tourists never see; meet locals; stop by for some amazing cinnamon buns and ice cream; the last remaining filigree silversmith in Split; maybe an iconic local artist if you'd like and even more. When you walk with me, you not only get the in-depth local expertise of a talented, local professional guide, but the nuance, humor and insight of someone who lives here, loves it and has been working with tourists and tour programming in the US as well as in Russia (where I lived and worked for many years)--TWO of us on every tour!. If there's something you would like to do a bit differently than what we have in our programs, just ask. The answer is usually yes! I look forward to meeting you sharing with you this really special part of the world! Do take a look at some of my wonderful reviews from travelers and agents who had a great time here! An oh yes, if there are just two or three of you and you book any program outside of Split, you get to ride in my well-maintained 1994 Mercedes C 250! Publisher of the 128 page Split-Central Dalmatia Travel Guide to Activities, Events and Destinations; The Split Guide; the Split Restaurant Guide (both supported by the Tourist Board of Split and Dalmatia county); DiscoverSplit, DiscoverHvar, DiscoverSolta and DiscoverKorcula--the only English language newspapers for tourists in these communities. Consultant to the Tourist Board of Split, English language editor of the official tourist board publication Visit Split. All programs are led by a registered, local, professional guide, who I accompany since only citizens can be licensed. So you get to see the wonders of Dalmatia through the eyes of an ex-pat American living here for over a decade and great friends of mine who are local, professional guides!

Overview of your Split tour

A unique, private Palace Tour where you get to discover a living 1, 700 year-old city and enjoy a wonderful grilled lunch with the fish that we buy together! FOR THE BEST SELECTION, PLEASE BE READY TO START NO LATER THAN 9:00 AND PREFERABLY EARLIER! Then, depending on what you like, we will buy the freshest and bring it to an authentic local konoba where it will be cooked to order when we return from our walk. After visiting the fish market, we will tour the Palace and include off the beaten track experiences as well as the Cathedral and more. A visit to the 3rd oldest synagogue in Europe is included if you wish as well. An authentic immersion into the past and present of this remarkable Old Town. Before our lunch at one of Split's oldest and most authentic, family-owned bistros, we'll stroll through the amazingly well preserved Palace and its substructures. Includes lunch with salad and wine/beverage, all admissions!

Fun experience going to fish market then eating the same later in the day. Robert is a native English speaker and really into the history and construction of the old palace. Very personable

Robert and Dina were outstanding tour guides for our visit to Split! We went to the fish market to select our lunch (first time trying Scorpion fish - outstanding!) and then went on one of the most informative tours I have ever experienced. Robert’s knowledge of the history of Split and the various components of Diocletian’s Palace was incredible! Certainly worth the time and effort to search him out for anyone who wants to learn the history of Split or any other historical part of Croatia!

Robert is a fascinating man - 80 years old and still offering tours - we were very impressed! The tour of Diocletioans Palace was intriguing. While Robert is not a native of Split, he is extremely knowledgeable - knows his history and also offered little known features of the Palace. A highlight was the trip to the fish market to select our fish for lunch. Later we stopped at the restaurant he selected where our fish and shrimp dish had been expertly prepared - absolutely delicious! Robert, thank you, thank you! We enjoyed our time with you so very much!

This was a terrific tour, combining an interesting and comprehensive tour of the old city and its history, along with a fantastic food experience where Robert our guide walked us through the local fish market and helped us to select a variety of fresh seafood and then later on the tour had them cooked and served to us at a wonderful local restaurant for our lunch. We enjoyed every aspect of the tour and highly recommend Robert for those considering a private tour in Split as well as a great food experience as part of it.

The Diocletian Palace is huge and complex. Thanks to Robert and his fellow guide/friend, Rada, we got to see all of it along with an understanding of the Palace's evolution to the present. Old Split is truly alive. Robert is one of a kind and very entertaining and Rada indulged my passion for architecture along with the history. Wonderful tour with Rada as a bonus!

Robert is a great guide and extremely knowledgeable. You should be aware he does not have a license to guide and will bring someone along who does. It didn't seem to interfere much with the process..He went to fish market and got fish and had the fish cooked by a restaurant he knows which made for a great lunch. My only criticism is that on occasion he walks ahead very fast…

we will meet you at your hotel, cruise terminal or where we agree. We can also arrange for a tuk tuk to get you from the cruise terminal to the waterfront Riva if you dont want to take the 15 minute walk along the harbor to the Palace. Easy walking, but streets are cobbled so wear decent shoes; bring a hat if it is hot and an empty water bottle--we will fill it with great cold water that has flowed from the same source for 1,700 years!
