Since the early '90s in France, it's remarkable how some new destinations have become popular, especially among the US visitors, this is the case of the landing beaches in Normandy. Some of my collegues close to their 60's (I'm close to my 50's) they call this: the "Saving Private Ryan effect". It is true that the Normandy beaches exist in our imagination thanks to many great movies, authors like Anthony Beevor or videogames like "Call of duty". My first movie was "The longest day", which is, by the way, a good way to gather info for a tour that, despite the long drive, is one of my favorites. After the morning pick up we will drive to spots like "La Pointe du Hoc" or the American mémorial at Omaha beach. The tour can be customized, therefore I can propose several possibilities regarding the different landmarks and spots. At the end of the day, we will be at the center of Paris around 7 PM, under good traffic conditions. In total 600 km, around 370 miles; I know. . . it's a long-distance, but worth it.
Places visited: - La Pointe du Hoc (rangers mémorial). Quick stop. - Omaha Beach (memorials and beach). Driving and going down to the beach. - Coleville cemetery and the visitors center. 1 hour stop roughly. - Arromanches (artificial harbor). Lunch, photos, souvenirs. Eventually and depending on our Schedule: - The German battery at Longues Sur Mer. Quick stop. - Juno Beach (Cosy's Pillbox). Quick stop. This is a suggested itinerary, however there are other options. Here are some examples that you can ask the same day: US: Utah and Omaha Beaches. Canada: Juno beach visitors center, Beny sur mer Canadian war cemetery. UK: Long beach, Pegasus bridge memorial, Arromanches museum. Also to mention the Memorial de Caen (beware that this is a long stop) if you want to include it. We can discuss what can fit in the day, the same morning.
