Overview of your New orleans tour:

19th Century New Orleans was the center of the domestic slave trade, the financial hub of the cotton and sugar plantation economy, the target of the largest land-sea military campaign of the Civil War, and the bloody testing ground in the struggle for civil rights during Reconstruction. Explore these dark and turbulent times in American history on this unique all-day walking and driving tour of New Orleans.

Your New orleans tour itinerary

Except for a fiery naval engagement on the Mississippi River, Confederate New Orleans surrendered to the Union Army and Navy without a shot fired. While there are no battlefields to visit, the South's "Queen City" city is fabulously rich in Civil War-era history. From our panoramic meet-up spot high above the River our day begins with a three-hour guided walk through the French Quarter. Highlights: * April, 1862: The Fall of New Orleans * "Sold Down the River"-- The Antebellum Slave Trade * Bankers' Row and the Origins of "Dixie" * New Orleans Occupied: Tyrants and Martyrs * Reconstruction's Bloody Beginnings We'll break for lunch followed by a citywide driving tour. Highlights: * Homer Plessy's Story: "Are You a Colored Man?" * Chalmette National Cemetery: Union Graves and Monuments * Metairie Cemetery: Confederate Graves and Monuments * The Garden District: Wealth, Power and Politics The day concludes with a visit to the New Orleans Civil War Museum.
