Hi everybody, my name is Marcello. I'm specialized in high grade archeological and historical tours. Born and raised in Naples and belonging to a very old Neapolitan famiIy I've got the official license of Professional Tour Guide in 2000. Not everybody knows that Napoli has one of the largest monumental concentrations in the whole world. Over the last nine centuries Normans, Svevians, Angevins, Aragons, Ausburgs, Bourbons, Savoy ruled this wonderful city, leaving their personal cultural mark. Almost all the greatest Italian artists had been here at least one time working for some royal family. Monuments, noble's residences, royal palaces and over 300 churches were built across the centuries, making Napoli one of the most amazing capitals of art. My unconventional tour means walking through thousands of years of Art and to join some of the greatest Italian artists like Caravaggio, Masaccio, Raffaello, Giotto; also Greek and Roman art, but not following the massive touristic itineraries. Marcelo gave us a wonderful tour of the archealogic museum containing artifacts from Pompei. The museum tour greatly enriched our visit to Pompei.
Marcello arranged a custom tour for our second day in Naples. He met us again at the train station, and took us in his car first to the Capodimonte Art Museum, with familiar paintings by Caravaggio, Titian, etc., which I had previously only seen in photos. The second portion was a visit to the San Martino Monastery-Museum on the Vomero hill overlooking the gulf. Finally, he dropped us off at the port for a fast ferry back to Sorrento. Based on our two days with Marcello, I would highly recommend him.
The Masters of Art tour was just what I was seeking, especially when conducted by an archaeologist and art historian. With us coming from Sorrento, Marcello met us at the train station, and took us by subway to the historic area. Highlights of the walking tour were the majolica tiles of the Santa Chiara Cloister, and Caravaggio's Seven Works of Mercy. Highlights of the Archaeological Museum were of course the Farnese marble sculptures, the Farnese Tazza, and the mosaic tiles recovered from Pompeii.
On our 2nd day with Marcello, we ventured further. Among other places, we visited the Museo di Capodimonte, which was truly amazing - so much amazing art including Caravaggio's Flagellation of Christ. Marcello told us of the rulers and popes of the time. We also visited the Certosa di S. Martino, which was a most impressive (and richly decorated) monastery. Another fascinating place. We had an great pasta lunch in a traditional restaurant surrounded by locals. It was a great day.
This was the first of 3 days spent touring with Marcello. He is a great representative for his city and shows her off well. This day we spent time with Caravaggio's 7 works of mercy and visited the veiled Christ sculpture - two amazing pieces of art. We walked the streets of the historic district, stopping to see nativity scenes and eat some great food. Marcello knows and loves the art of Napoli and conveys that well. We enjoyed the day.
The tour goes through the highlights of Napoli and its two thousand years of history and art masterpieces. Starting from the Monumental district, where you will admire one of the four Royal Palaces of Napoli, the so-called New Castle, built in 1279, the art nouveau style Gallery Umberto I, and the Royal opera house San Carlo Theatre, the oldest in Europe, we go to the Greek and Roman district, where we have two thousand years of art stratification. That is the place where you will have the real essence of Napoli. The Seven Works of Mercy, a masterpiece of Caravaggio painted in 1607 or the Veiled Christ, a marble statue sculpted in 1753, will take your breath away. The "Majolica Cloister" from the Monastery of Santa Chiara, the 14th frescoes of Giotto or the street art of Banksy is the most amazing contradiction. And that will be just the beginning. Nearby the Greek and Roman district there is the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, the most important museum of classical archaeology in Italy.
