It might seem absurd, but we only have to thank Vesuvio if we have the chance, nowadays, to visit the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Your Naples tour itinerary
After a quick ride on the highway we'll start driving up to the volcano. - On our way up, you will see volcanic rocks and the typical flora on the lava flows. - At mid height we are driving next to the lava slide from last eruption: solid lava covered of lichens, peculiar to the Vesuvius. - Besides, we will see the first observatory in the world, that dates back to 1841. At about 1000 mt. (3000 ft), you will leave the car and start the climbing to the top. - The climbing lasts about 30 minutes, depending on your pace. From the top you will have a breathtaking view of the bay of Naples and its islands Capri, Ischia and Procida. - Besides, looking down into the crater you can see the "Gran Cono", some geysers and several volcanic deposits. - After coming back, you'll have time for lunch and then we'll go on with the visit of the ruins of Herculaneum, where you'll see the results of the eruption of Vesuvius, dating back in 79 aC. that will give you the perfect insight on the daily life of Roman people.
