Matera preserves a great heritage of culture and traditions, As European Capital of Culture 2019 It host prestigious exhibitions of great interest. We walk through the modern city of Baroque churches and graceful palaces. The first glimpse of the sassi stops you in your tracks, looking down at the dramatic tangle of grey stone houses; a contrast with the elegance of the new town. Walking down a steep staircase we plunged into the magical world that doesn't quite feel real. I consider the city of Matera unique. A place where ancient traditions are combined with the testimonies of a peasant and archaic city, which make us reflect on the evolution of life in this land. The most beautiful thing, however, are the colors of a hard and wild nature, which blend with the historic districts of a city halfway between past and future.
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Matera with Carlo. Matera is a fascinating place and Carlo is so knowledgeable about the history of this ancient city. Carlo is funny, friendly…altogether good company. We highly recommend touring with him.
I booked a cruise w. a stop Bari only 3 mo. before departure. My grandmother was from a town near Matera -i tried to find a guide to take me there but all were booked including Carlo...i reached out again to him explaining my mission & he graciously accepted the tour. It was his 2nd of the day & would make his arrival home very late. He was one of 2 guides i will remember as "the best of all time" in all my traveling. He helped my husband who has trouble walking by pushing the wheelchair. Most of all he got into this adventure even more than i did - helped get the records at the town hall & convinced officials to let me photograph them! He found where my grandmother's street/location of the house was where she was born. We had a wonderful time talking in the drive to & from the ship and even got a stop in Matera on the way back. Thank you Carlo for the priceless memories.
Carlo was waiting for us as we got off the ship. We had a very comfortable journey in his car to Matera - Puglia. We visited the ancient caves, which looked onto the old town from the other side of the valley and then was shown around the old town of Matera. Carlo was very informative with the history and the knowledge of where the James Bond, no time to die, was filmed. We both enjoyed this tour immensely and was back at our ship in good time. Would definitely recommend Carlo
Carlo was an excellent guide who took us to viewing spots that nobody else would have access to. Carlo was very obliging but due to the heat we weren't able to take up all his offers. The only downside was that Carlo's usual vehicle was unavailable.
Carlo gave my husband and I a nice tour of Matera and Bari. He was very friendly, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. He went out of his way to show us a good time. I would recommend him.
The city of Matera is amazing and Carlo was a fantastic knowledgeable guide. He not only showed us the city, which included a Dali exhibit in an ancient church and a 1950s furnished cave dwelling. Yes, 1950s. These are cave dwellings built and rebuilt since Neanderthal times. Mind boggling history., but he also helped us arrange transport the following day for something totally unrelated. I would definitely recommend this tour and having Carlo as your guide!
Meeting in Bari and transfer to Matera. - The tour will start in Vittorio Veneto Square, where we can enjoy a view on the "Sassi" before entering in the heart of Sasso Barisano. - We will visit one of the rupestrian church in the town of Matera, San Pietro Barisano. - Then, we will be walking along the panoramic street along the canyon. - We will arrive in Sasso Caveoso where will enter into an ancient cave dwelling with furnishings typical of Matera. - Then, we enter in the cave Church of Santa Lucia alle Malve.
