Explore Ladakh your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Ladakh tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Ladakh for every interest, including:

Nature and Wildlife tours: at dawn in Hemis National Park, your guide sets up a scope to look for blue sheep and Himalayan marmots, and shows you how to read tracks that hint at snow leopard. You can also drive to Tso Moriri or the Shey marshes to bird-watch for black-necked cranes and bar-headed geese, with time for short lakeside walks that match your altitude comfort.

Art and Culture tours: step inside Thiksey Monastery for morning prayers and views of the Maitreya Buddha, then continue to Alchi to see 11th century murals with context from a local art guide. Visit Stok Palace’s small museum and a village home to sip butter tea, shape momos, and learn about traditional amchi healing.

Layover tours: with a few hours between flights at Leh airport, your guide can pick you up for a quick circuit to Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, and the main bazaar to sample apricot jam and check pashmina quality. If time allows, continue to the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar near Nimmu, Magnetic Hill, and Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, keeping the pace easy for altitude and returning to the terminal on schedule.

Leh is easy to walk in the centre, but sights are spread out and public buses are limited outside summer. You can book chauffeured tours with private transportation, and your local guide can arrange a 4x4 and any permits needed for places like Nubra or Pangong.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Ladakh inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Ladakh

From Ladakh, plan day trips to quiet monasteries, river valleys, and high passes close to Leh, and your tour can balance scenic stops with local culture without rushing.

- Thiksey, Shey, and Hemis: See sunrise views over the Indus Valley at Thiksey, walk courtyards rich with murals at Shey, and explore the museum and prayer halls at Hemis. Good if you like history, architecture, and calm spaces, with short drives between each stop.

- Sham Valley with Alchi and Likir: Follow the Indus to the Alchi temple complex with 11th century art, step into Likir for hilltop views, and pause at the confluence near Nimmu. Great for day trips focused on culture, village life, and easy walks with photo stops.

- Khardung La and North Pullu: Cross one of Ladakh’s highest road passes for mountain views, snow patches in season, and tea at a roadside stop. Works for travellers who want altitude, a taste of the old trade route, and a half day that still feels epic.

- Lamayuru and Basgo: Drive to Lamayuru’s “moonland” rock formations and monastery, then return via the ruined citadel at Basgo for golden-hour light. Suits geology fans, history buffs, and anyone who enjoys long, steady drives with big scenery.

- Pangong Lake via Chang La: A long day that rewards you with bright, shifting blues, grazing kiang if you are lucky, and quiet lakeside hamlets. Best for landscape photography and wide-open views, with your tour pacing breaks on the high road.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Ladakh most travellers miss.
