The history of Jews in Berlin begins in the Middle Ages and is marked by periods of tolerance, oppression, torture, execution, and expulsion. Until the modern era, they were repeatedly banished, accused of spreading the plague, desecration, and even murdering a Prince. The first Jewish community dates back to 1671 when, after an absence of one hundred years, they are again admitted to Brandenburg. The road to emancipation, and economic and social integration, will last over two centuries. This economic and intellectual success generated jealousies accentuated by growing anti-Semitism. Adolf Hitler's rise to power in 1933 put an end to this prosperity and stopped with the deportation of millions to concentration camps. We will follow in the footsteps of this history from the Middle Ages to the present. Also, we will become acquainted with the personalities who left their mark in Berlin: Moses Mendelssohn, Veitel Heine Ephraim, Henriette Herz, Wilfrid Israel, Hermann Tietz, and Regine Jonas, to name a few.
We will start at the Nicholas quarter, historical center with the: - Ephraim-Palais Stop at the: - Location of Nathan Israel Department store - Location of Moses Mendelssohn House - Location of the Old Synagogue - Rosenstrasse: memorial to the protest We will walk to the Hackesche Höfe: If open we will visit: - Museum Otto Weidt's Workshop for the Blind Walk to the Große Hamburger Strasse and stop at: - Jewish School - Jewish cemetery Continue to - Home of the first woman Rabbi And finish at the: - New Synagogue I am more than willing to customize this tour according to your preferences, please contact me for a customized tour
