I was born and grew up in Kent, United Kingdom. I am widely traveled and I have been living in Normandy for seventeen years, studying the history of this ancient historical region, both Medieval/Middle Age and WWII. With my Anglo/Norman roots, I am passionate about both these periods and take great personal delight in passing on much that I have learned to my guests and enjoy discussions and exchanging personal ideas. I have been told that I have a friendly nature and an enthusiastic manner, I am easy to understand as I am a Native English Speaker. I worked in all of these sectors throughout the summer season of 2017 on an almost daily basis. I have Lived in Le Mont St Michel for short periods and was privileged to attend Christmas mass in the Abbey with the Monks and Sisters and dined and conversed with them. During all this time I kept up my studies both off and on-site, picking up knowledge from personal stories of guests, including a D day veterans. I am a member of the Guild Of battlefield Guides and a registered Guide in France. My Local knowledge allows me to visit sites that are less well known by non locals. Not normally permitted to give official guided tours in the Abbey of Le Mont St Michel, it is restricted to their personal guides. Low profile is the better part of valor!

Overview of your Bayeux tour

Known as Mont Tombe, from the Roman name Tumba, Le Mont St Michel is a granite outcrop, a tidal island, that was formed 525 million years ago. The first community was formed by an Irish Hermit. But it was the Bishop of Avranches (Saint Aubert) who built the first church on Le Mont in 709. It came under the control of the Bretons in 867, but William Longsword, annexed it in 933. Over the centuries the church became the beautiful Gothic monument that is seen today, with eventually the Gold Archangel at the summit. It, along with Mont Dol plays an important part on the Bayeux tapestry and it was one of the turning points in the 100 years war. This tour takes us through the spectacular regions of Normandy and Brittany, separated largely by the Couesnon river, this has been a disputed boundary for hundreds of years between the rival dukes. We can climb the narrow, medieval street to the abbey and descend by the ramparts, having lunch either on le mont in one of the many restaurants in the nearby villages.

This was a long journey from our location but Graham made it enjoyable. We especially appreciated his tips on ticket purchase and process. The history of the area was very interesting and Graham answered our questions well.

This tour was Day 2 of 5 tours with Graham. Looking like it was going to be a rainy day we left early in the morning to get to the Mont before the storm. Being such a notable site, it of course was very crowded; however, Graham knew how to get to the right spots for the shuttle and to the places we wanted to see. I chose not to go up to the abbey, because it would have taken much time and trouble for me to get there (even though Graham was willing to help me do it), so my sister and he climbed all the steps to the abbey. By the time they returned, the storm had come in force! My sister was excited about her tour with Graham to the abbey, as he knows so much about the area and interesting details about what she was observing that she felt her knowledge was quite enriched. She is an older lady, and he assisted her in coming down the wet stairs. I was so pleased to see how happy she was in her experience. While they were hiking stairs, I visited the Medieval Village which was quaint, old, and fun. Plenty of shops and little restaurants lined the streets, so my time was enjoyable and valuable. After the tour, and in the pouring rain, Graham took us to lunch in Arromanches, which was another example of how he watched out for us and listened to our wishes. Book him!

Graham was very accommodating and picked our Outlander Society group up from the river cruise port in Caudubec in very bad weather. However we managed to get some sunshine and enjoyed our visit to le mont st Michel. Graham was very knowledgeable and friendly.

Graham was an outstanding guide and fully met our needs. He timed our visit perfectly allowing time for Breton crepes, a visit to St. Michelle, Mont Dor and a walk around the walled city of St. Malo. Picked us up on time and got us back to ship at the time we requested. My wife said he gave us a perfect day and the highlight of our trip. I highly recommend Graham for Brittany and Normandy!

Your Bayeux tour itinerary

We Arrive at Le Mont in the main car park and I leave you to take the shuttle bus to the base of Le Mont st Michel. You will be transported back a thousand years in time, with the timber framed houses and stone block narrow street that climbs the mount. You pass many sights on our way, the dungeon prisons, naval museum and 11th century church of St Pierre with Joan of arc at the entrance. There are many restaurants also. As you clear the inhabited area, you climb up towards the famous fortified abbey and eventually arrive at the entrance. An Abbey tour takes around 45 minutes and is a delight of architectural and historical splendour, from the huge supporting pillars to the delicate limestone carvings in the cloisters and abbatial. You can descend by the outer ramparts with the spectacular views of the bay and surrounding coastline, visible are the historical towns of Avranches and Granville, home to Christian Dior, Mont Dol and Channel Islands. We can spend the rest of the day visiting local interests.
