Full day American D-Day tour

Michael is an amazing tour guide and made our experience truly memorable. My husband is a WW2 buff and uses a lightweight wheelchair chair. Michael made sure he got as close as possible to all sites including onto the sand on Utah and Omaha beaches. He accommodated our every whim from getting baguettes, going to a museum store for books, getting amazing ice cream, and finding us an ATM. You will definitely not be disappointed if you choose Michael as your guide. We only wish we had known about his bed and breakfast when we booked our lodging.

I booked a private Normandy WWII tour through ToursByLocals because I wanted to visit my grandfather’s grave at Bretteville-Sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery which larger tours could not accommodate. My guide, Mike, was exceptional. He researched my grandfather’s military history before the tour, brought an American flag for me to place on his grave, took thoughtful photos of the visit, and answered all my questions throughout the day. He truly cared about helping me honor my grandfather’s memory. He was also incredibly knowledgeable about the American D-Day sector which we visited next. At Utah and Omaha Beaches and the American Cemetery, he used maps, historical pictures and detailed explanations to help me understand military strategies, terrain challenges and why the outcomes at Utah and Omaha Beaches were so dramatically different. His ability to bring the history to life made the experience far more meaningful and moving than simply visiting the sites on my own.

Miike V is an excellent guide, and I can say this with conviction, as I have used many over the years. He is a person who has passion for his work and truly enjoys the time spent with tour members. In our case there were 5 of us, 2 American and 3 Germans, my wife's relatives. He is an extremely well qualified D-Day historian, but more importantly his has spent the time researching the lives of soldiers caught in this terrible conflict. A good example was the telling of where Sgt "Jumpin" Joe Beyrle, an American war hero started his unwavering commitment to defeating the Germans. Mike told his story with feeling, humor and respect. Without retelling the whole story, my wife had personally met John Beyrle, US Ambassador to Russia, Sgt Joe's son. We live in Grand Rapids, MI, Sgt Joe was born in Muskegon, MI 40 miles away. Mike had connected the dots based on our earlier conversation.

Mike was wonderful! Exceeded our high expectations! He was very open to our questions and always eager to make the visit to the various sites as informative as possible. He never made us feel rushed. Mike lives and breathes WW 2 history so his enthusiasm is genuine! Highly recommend!
