I'm an ex-pat American, a permanent resident of Croatia, and have lived in Split for 15 years. I created and published DiscoverSplit, the city's only free, English language annual newspaper for tourists which you can see online along with the Tourist Board of Split's newest publication, The Split Guide; DiscoverSplit's Restaurant Guide and the Split/Dalmatia Travel Guide. All of these are supported and approved by the Tourist Board of Split, whom I work with as a consultant. I also created the first and only walking map of all the streets and alleys within the actual Palace of Diocletian--which is part of the newspaper. Together with friends who own wineries, restaurants, honey farms and the best professional guides, I have created a suite of intriguing private tours that take you off-the-beaten-track to see places most tourists never see; meet locals; stop by for some amazing cinnamon buns and ice cream; the last remaining filigree silversmith in Split; maybe an iconic local artist if you'd like and even more. When you walk with me, you not only get the in-depth local expertise of a talented, local professional, but the nuance, humor and insight of someone who lives here, loves it and has been working with tourists and tour programming in the US as well as in Russia (where I lived and worked for many years). Split's Diocletian's Palace has been continuously occupied for more than 1, 700 years! As many people live inside its fortress walls today as did when the Emperor Diocletian ruled the Roman world. We'll discover this UNESCO World Heritage site together, strolling the ancient streets, visiting St. Duje Cathedral, arguably the first Christian cathedral on the planet; Jupiter's Temple (Diocletian was the last self-proclaimed diety, the son of Jupiter), local haunts, amazing cinammon buns if you want to stop for coffee and more. Then it's off to the birthplace of Zinfandel, 400 meters above the sea enjoying a spectacular boutique winery's best wines in an outdoor glassed in pavilion with a chef-prepared 3 course gourmet lunch, including three wines--sparkling wine to greet us and dessert! A glorious day of true authentic experiences.
Great tour with knowledgeable guide Wine pairing lunch was superb. Could be less rushed particularly in hit weather with larger group. He was anxious to show us everything. Could lay out options when querying the group initially and tailor to time, interest , and temperature. Very entertaining guide with wealth of knowledge.
Robert gave us a wonderful tour of Split, Croatia. He is passionate about Europe's archeological sites, and gave us an excellent overview of Diocletian's Palace, where he actually prepared the official tour map. He articulated to us his great knowledge of this centuries-old historic treasure. Robert then took us to visit a hillside start-up Winery. We were hosted by the Vintner and his wife, a professionally trained chef who prepared us a delightful three-course lunch. We highly recommend this tour!
Other than a little confusion of where exactly we were meeting Robert at the port (we arrived by cruise ship), the tour was great. Robert was so interesting and knowledgeable. We probably packed too much into the tour as we added a winery excursion! In retrospect we could have spent another couple of hours in the Diocletian's palace and old town. But it was all lovely and was one of the highlights of our trip.
