If you want a comprehensive tour of the area, join me on this excursion because as a classical scholar I can give you a better insight into the tumultuous history of the region of Dalmatia. Our story starts with Salona, one of the most important early Christian sites in the world where hundreds of scattered sarcophagi and impressive ruins of once magnificent edifices along with its amphitheater emerge among olive groves, vineyards and orchards. Trogir was proclaimed a UNESCO site because of its long urban continuity. Despite its minuscule size, it captivates by concentration of outstanding Romanesque churches, sophisticated Renaissance public buildings and opulent Baroque mansions. The complexity of the local history is mostly accentuated by the incongruous hodgepodge of the Old Town of Split. The Diocletian's Palace is not only home to fascinating Roman monuments, but also to medieval mansions, hole-in-the-wall bars, café terraces, boutiques and most important still to local residents.
This is an 8h tour which can be customized to your needs, interests and activity level. Generally we start with Split: - Diocletian's Palace with its Substructure - Mausoleum of the Roman Emperor, now the Cathedral - Temple of Jupiter As we then zig-zag through the maze of the Old Town, its history becomes even more tangible because it is tightly interwoven with features of everyday modern living. The tour continues with a 15-minute drive to Salona. It is a spread out site, so we will need some 1, 5h to cover it all: - cemetery with its impressive Basilica and scattered sarcophagi - small museum - Episcopal Center - evocative Amphiteater Then we move on to Trogir. It is a short 20 minute ride. - Cathedral of St Lawrence - Town Hall and Town Loggia - Clock Tower - through the South Gate to the waterfront and the Kamerlengo Castle We will spend some 1, 5h there. Return to Split after Trogir (another half an hour drive). A break for a coffee/drink/lunch can be taken at any point.

Air-conditioned vehicle, Mercedes E class (for 2 people) or V class (for 6 people). A minibus can be arranged for a larger group. As for the tours of both towns, the sightseeing can only be done on foot. It is advisable to wear non-slip comfortable walking shoes as all the streets are cobbled, so they are slippery especially in wet weather, whereas in Salona there is only a dirt road.
