Guide #31660
Hello, I’m Youngsik — a lifelong explorer who grew up in Seoul and has spent over a decade sharing Korea’s history and culture with travelers from around the world. Seoul-based explorer and history specialist with over a decade of experience guiding travelers through Korea’s culture, traditions, and hidden stories. With a background in Korean history and a passion for uncovering lesser-known places, I love helping visitors discover Seoul beyond the usual tourist paths — from royal palaces and hanok villages to secret alleys and local neighborhoods. I’ve always been a bit of an explorer. Ever since I was a kid growing up in Seoul, South Korea, I’ve been curious about what lies beyond the sea, behind the mountains, or just past the next bus stop. My very first “expedition” happened when I was around ten years old. I noticed that the local bus in my neighborhood always ran the same route, so one day I hopped on—alone—and rode it all the way to the final stop. Two hours later, I found myself on the outskirts of Seoul, amazed by how different the world looked just beyond my familiar streets. That small adventure sparked a lifelong love for exploring Korea—its cities, countryside, coastlines, and hidden corners. Over the years, I’ve traveled extensively throughout South Korea using buses, trains, bicycles, motorcycles, and cars. One of my most unforgettable journeys was a cross-country trip on a Greyhound bus from New York to Los Angeles in 2019—a memory that still inspires me to see the world from new perspectives. Since 2013, I have been working with travelers from around the world, helping them discover Korea’s history, culture, and hidden local gems. Over more than a decade of guiding, I’ve had countless opportunities to share the country’s landscapes, traditions, and stories with curious visitors — and I’ve grown immensely through these experiences. One of the most meaningful transformations came from seeing my country through the eyes of international travelers. Having grown up with a typical Korean education, I never questioned many things that felt “normal.” But visitors would ask thoughtful questions that opened my eyes to the deeper meanings behind Korean customs, traditions, and social norms. There’s a Korean saying: “You can’t see the shape of the mountain from within the forest.” That perfectly describes my experience. By stepping outside my cultural assumptions, I started to uncover layers of Korean history, culture, and society that I had never noticed before—things that aren’t taught in school but shape the country in profound ways. This journey led me to begin graduate studies in Korean history in 2021, deepening my understanding of Korea’s past and its influence on the present. Today, I aim to share these discoveries not just as a guide, but as a fellow explorer. I regularly post articles about Korean history, culture, society, travel tips, and local experiences to help visitors and residents alike discover Korea from fresh perspectives. Whether you’re curious about Seoul’s hidden alleys, planning your first trip to Korea, or already living here and eager to dive deeper, I hope you’ll find something valuable, insightful, and inspiring. Join me in exploring Korea beyond the surface, and discover stories that make this country truly unforgettable.

We provided Young with a challenge as we were only in Seoul for less than a day. He did an amazing job as we saw more than we imagined possible, with a nice pace, very interesting insight and a thorough view of the city and Koean culture. Im looking forward to learning more thru his writings as Young is an author as well. Thank you for a great time.
