Welcome to New York City! My name is Jonathan and I'd love to show you my NYC! I have deep generational roots in New York City, mirroring the classic immigrant experience from Ellis Island to the Jewish Lower East Side. This background has inspired an ongoing quest for the best of the city past and present, from the suspension cables of the Brooklyn Bridge to the hot pastrami at Katz's deli. I moved from the depths of Jersey to Manhattan's Morningside Heights at age 18 for college. I studied American and ancient Roman History at Columbia University under Kenneth Jackson, one of the all-time great historians of New York City. After college I worked for a few years in finance by Wall Street and in Midtown before heading back to school in Israel, where I earned an MA in Archeology from Bar Ilan University and got my start in tourism. I currently guide tours in New York City. I love tracing the city's history, from the footprints of George Washington to those of Malcolm X, and exploring hidden gems from pizza slices to jazz clubs. I see New York City as an endless playground of culture, history, and energy where every day seems to yield a new adventure. I would love to show you my favorite things about the greatest city in the world! B.A. in history from Columbia University in the City of New York; M.A. in Archeology from Bar Ilan University; Tour guide certification in New York City; Tour guide certification in Israel. I am not a driver. I can accompany you in your vehicle or I can arrange for a separate car and driver.

Walk the steps of America’s First Peoples, Dutch colonists, American Revolutionaries, British Redcoats, Hasidic Jews, and West Indian immigrants as we explore one of New York’s most consequential neighborhoods. We’ll focus on two of Crown Heights’ defining communities: the Lubavitch Hasidic Jews and the West Indian immigrants who brought vibrant Caribbean culture to Brooklyn. These two communities have rich histories in Crown Heights, and have influenced broader American culture. In 1991, all eyes were on this neighborhood as these two groups clashed in the most significant riots in New York City since the days of the Civil Rights Movement. Today’s neighborhood has seen great change with the recent hyper-gentrification but, along with this recent investment, tensions still simmer below the surface.
Trinidad Golden Bakery: where West Indian cuisine blends African, Indian, and Chinese influences into a unique culinary experience. Studebaker Showroom: the historic Studebaker Showroom, part of 'Automobile Row,' once a symbol of the American dream. Eastern Parkway: the first boulevard of its kind in the U.S., that once witnessed one of the largest battles of the Revolutionary War. Talmudical Seminary Oholei Torah: once hosted Albert Einstein, Mark Rothko, and Joan Rivers, before it became the seminary for aspiring Chabad rabbis. 770 Eastern Parkway: Arguably the most famous synagogue in the world, this site was the home of Lubavitcher Rebbe and remains the spiritual heart of the Chabad movement. Kingston Avenue: the main drag of the Hasidic neighborhood, a window into the daily life of this unique world. The Carlos Lezama Archives and Caribbean Cultural Center: the former home of the first African American woman to run for President and the birthplace of the vibrant West Indian Day Parade
