William (or Billy) BEM is the longest serving tour guide in Belfast. He was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to the Northern Ireland community. During the height of the 'Belfast Troubles' he would have been seen taking groups around his beloved city. Time has moved on and despite the arrival of many more guides in Belfast, William is still in great demand, as a step-on coach guide and walking tours. Blue Badge Guides of which William is one, are selected, trained and examined by the official British tourist boards. The training is detailed and comprehensive, the examinations rigorous and registration an achievement. Every guide will have the same background of national core knowledge combined with in-depth local knowledge. The Blue Badge is recognized internationally. William as a Blue Badge Guide has a wealth of experience which is respected by discriminating tour operators and travel agents throughout the world. Blue Badge Tourist Guide Certificate. Passed by the Institute of Tourist Guiding, June 2006. You are asked to keep with the group at all times. It is advisable to wear neutral clothing without slogans and images that may cause offense.

Would you start a book from the second chapter? of course not, you would want to start at the beginning. The Welcome to Belfast tour does just that in the story of Belfast. For many people arriving for the first time, Great Victoria Street is the beginning of their Belfast experience as they arrive by train or bus. As your Belfast born guide I want to welcome you to Belfast and tell about the unlikely Belfast success story. From a crossing at a sand bank, without any natural resources it mushroomed into a great Victorian city during the 1800s when shipping and linen played a major part in its development. I shall point out a number of interesting buildings including the iconic Belfast City Hall. Also notable people in the world of science, architecture, religion, education, arts and industry. The tour ends with a visit to the Titanic Garden. The tour does not include visits to buildings from the inside
