Discovering the soul of the Basque people is not simply a journey — it is an experience of life, culture, and identity. I would be delighted to help you take a small part of that spirit back home with you. My name is Aitor (pronounced “I-tour”). Many guests smile when they hear it, as if my name had somehow predicted my profession. In Basque tradition, Aitor is the legendary father of the Basques. I am certainly no mythological figure — but I am proudly Basque, born and raised in this remarkable land, and deeply passionate about sharing its culture and way of life. Over the years I have specialized in designing private, tailor-made cultural journeys for discerning travelers seeking a deeper understanding of the Basque Country. Through an extensive network within the region’s premium hospitality, gastronomy, and cultural sectors, I create experiences shaped around your interests, pace, and curiosity. Bilbao is often the perfect starting point. Walking through its historic streets reveals the proud and vibrant spirit locals call the botxera soul. Yet the Basque Country offers many dimensions within easy reach. You may wish to explore the dramatic coastline and fishing heritage of places such as San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, the harbor town of Bermeo, the natural sanctuary of Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, or the elegant fishing village of Getaria. Others prefer discovering how history, nature, and Basque identity intertwine in places such as Gernika — immortalized by Pablo Picasso — or the spiritual beauty of the Sanctuary of Loyola. If time allows, I often recommend exploring other remarkable corners of the region: – Vitoria-Gasteiz, celebrated internationally for its harmony between medieval heritage, contemporary design, and sustainability. – Rioja wine region, where spectacular landscapes, medieval villages, and some of Spain’s most prestigious wines define the experience. – San Sebastian, a refined coastal city where gastronomy, elegance, and cultural life meet the Atlantic. – And the sophisticated charm of Biarritz and the French Basque Country, where Basque, French, and Spanish influences blend beautifully. I am an official tour guide accredited by the Basque Government, a member of the Association of Professional Guides of the Basque Country, and part of the luxury travel network Basque Luxury. Select according to what your souls asks of you. And if you have other ideas, we can begin designing a private journey shaped entirely around what inspires you most. Tour to the famous Rioja wine production area, enjoying best local wines. Rioja is best wine production area in Spain and we will taste best of its wines and discover most avant garde architecture of some iconic wineries and also its traditional villages and countryside (which is on the way to be preserved like Unesco Heritage). Travel in time with me to see the most modern architecture in Marques de Riscal and towns frozen in medieval period like the walled town of Laguardia. See hidden places like a prehistoric monument or other sites of historical important hard to find on your own and still to be discovered for many locals. And of course, taste best of the local wines in the best wineries on the area, or prepare yourself to learn about the local way of production of wine in (we can visit 1 or 2 wineries, please specify with the booking). As your private tour guide, I can adjust the schedule, duration and activities to meet your needs. Please let me know of any special requests you have.
Great three days in Rioja wine country and San Sebastian. High recommend our guide, Aitor D.
We have just finished wonderful three days in Bilbao, Spain with Aitor D. Two days in Rioja wine country: one day in La Guardia and one day in Haro, followed by a day in San Sebastian. We couldn't be happier with our choice of tours and our guide. Aitor is not only knowledgeable about wine and food, but also able to answer a myriad of questions about both the history and geography of Spain, and also the culture, language, and history of the Basque Country. Add that level of knowledge to an extremely charming personality, and Aitor is the perfect choice to make your visit to the Biscay Province a grand success. This is our third experience with guides from Tour by Locals, and I can’t wait to schedule my next tour.
You cannot leave the Bilbao area without taking this tour with Aitor to visit the Rioja wine region! We had the best time visiting the Marques de Riscal and Ysios wineries plus the town of La Guardia and ALL the different beautiful stops that Aitor will make along the way. It was an unforgettable beautiful day made more special by the incredible pictures that he will take and the wonderful lunch stop! Thank you!!
Aitor Delgado gave us an amazing tour through the wine country of La Rioja. He was so very personable and very knowledgable not just of the wine and its production but also of the history and architecture of the region. We traveled through several small towns and 4 different wineries. We stopped in one of the towns for a delicious traditional meal. He pointed out many interesting things such as the tunnels under one of the cities that we never would have explored on our own. Excellent!
A wonderful experience. My husband fell ill, meaning that I did the tour alone with the tour guide. But he put me very much at ease, was friendly, very knowledgeable and a delightful host. I recommend him without hesitation.
I would rate Aitor a 10 on a scale of 1-5 Ken from Kansas City, USA
Tour to the famous Rioja wine production area, enjoying our best local wines and seeing best sites. Travel in time to: + make a picture stop to see the contemporary Frank Gehry building of Marques de Riscal Winery, + admire the richly decorated Baroque buildings, + walk by the the charming Medieval town of Laguardia, + get surprised with a Prehistoric monument found here. . . in areas of Rioja hard to find without a local acknowledged guide. Designed to see the whole way of production of wine in 1 or 2 wineries (please specify your interest with the booking) and tasting other great wines in another winery (or wineries, please, specify) but it will depend on your desires as it is completely tailored for you. Of course, as your private tour guide, I can adjust the schedule, duration and activities to meet your needs. Please let me know of any special requests you have.
