Hello, I’m Ernest, a licensed level 4 culture site tour guide with a National Senior Certificate. Based in Durban, I'm 49 years old and have more than 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry, as well as ten years of experience guiding a wide range of travellers. I have worked with conference guests needing short, insightful tours to cruise passengers eager for cultural and safari experiences. I'm happy to design each tour to suit your needs, time and interests. Cultural experiences are at the heart of my guiding style. I love offering guests the chance to connect to the people, traditions and stories of South Africa. I also lead “building experience” tours focused on bird watching in richly diverse forests, as well as adventure outings like hikes to the remarkable Raster Caves. For those for history enthusiasts or even researchers, I offer battlefield tours tailored which delve into the region’s wartime past. Trust me to provide a smooth, informative and memorable experience. My goal is to leave every guest with a deeper appreciation of this vibrant, complex region. Let me show you a side of South Africa that’s rich in nature, history and heart!

Come on this tour for a unique opportunity to engage with the natives and learn more about their daily practices, from religion to cuisine. We'll visit a rural homestead where I'll show you the cultural differences between the men and women chores. We'll also approach a local chief house and even a nineteenth century girls school founded by the American Board of Missionaries, of whom I'll tell you about. Besides this, you'll have the rare chance to attend a traditional ceremony, taste authentic food and experience life in caves. The people who live in Durban's Rasta Caves mainly rely on homegrown vegetables & herbs, and you'll be a firsthand witness to it.
-The tour will start with a morning pick-up from your hotel from where we'll depart to Inanda village. -Approximately 30 mins later we'll be visiting the Ohlange Museum, where I'll tell you about when Nelson Mandela voted there. -We'll continue exploring the village by visiting the Inanda Seminary, a girls-only African Boarding School that dates back to the 1870s. -Next, we'll step inside the Rasta Caves in Umzinyathi, where we'll engage with the inhabitants. -Afterwards, we'll head to a rural village in the Emaphephetheni area. -On arrival, we'll visit the local chief or herd man's house and greet him, so we can then proceed to visit an adjacent homestead. -We could then step inside the cows & goats kraal. -Next, you'll get to taste traditional food either from a shisanyama or at a local restaurant. -What follows will be a visit to another homestead where you'll see local artisans making crafts and beads. -At last, we'll attend a traditional dance show, before dropping you off in your hotel.
