This tour is an interweaving of the history and culture of this unique and famous city. The fabulous Taormina, the pearl of the Ionian sea, is located on a spectacular hillside, its landscape is amazing, unique and unforgettable. It is an important city of culture and during the Summer there are many festivals and films, concerts, dance performances, meetings and fashion shows to be seen. As you walk from one of the city's highlights to another you will be taken on a journey through history, a chance to imagine and get a feel, a sense of what it was to live here throughout the centuries and you will look out and see the timeless views of this beautiful and dramatic Mediterranean coastline.
The visit starts at Porta Messina, Gate Messina, the Spanish gate and reveals part of the Spanish fortifications. We'll then visit the Ancient Theatre, the 2nd largest in Sicily, after the Greek Theatre of Syracuse. Then I'll show you the ruins of the Roman Odeon, the church dedicated to S. Caterina and Palazzo Corvaia. It is very interesting to walk into the park of Villa Comunale, that was the garden of the villa where Lady Florence Trevelyan, (1884) cousin of Queen Victoria, once lived. Along the old street constructed by the Romans which is actually now the main street, I'll show you the Cathedral, some important buildings, the fountain in Piazza Duomo, and we will end the tour at the Spanish Gate called Porta Catania.
