Hello everyone, I'm Paolo Mondola, a professional archaeologist and licensed tourist guide (License No. 1792, Campania Region). I was born and raised in the heart of the Bay of Naples, at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, an area renowned for its extraordinary archaeological heritage. Since childhood, I have been passionate about history and archaeology, especially because I grew up just a few minutes from the remarkable archaeological site of Herculaneum. As a child, I loved exploring the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, where I was fascinated by the greatness of Greek and Roman civilization. That passion eventually became my profession, leading me to pursue a career as both an archaeologist and a licensed tourist guide. I graduated cum laude from the University of Naples "L'Orientale" with a Master's Degree in Classical Archaeology. During my academic training, I participated in several archaeological excavations in Pompeii and Cumae, gaining valuable field experience that allows me to bring the ancient world to life for my guests. Over the years, I have developed extensive knowledge not only of Pompeii and Herculaneum, but also of Naples, whose historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Phlegraean Fields, and the stunning Amalfi Coast, including Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. This region is truly unique—a place where history, archaeology, breathtaking landscapes, and centuries-old traditions come together. It is also famous for its outstanding cuisine; after all, the world-famous Pizza Margherita was born here. I deeply love my homeland, rich in history, culture, and natural beauty, and I would be delighted to share it with you. My goal is to provide an authentic, engaging, and unforgettable experience, helping you discover the fascinating history and timeless charm of Southern Italy. Welcome to the real Italy. Credentials Archaeologist – Licensed Tourist Guide (License No. 1792) Master's Degree in Classical Archaeology (cum laude) from the University of Naples "L'Orientale", one of Italy's leading universities in the field of archaeology. Professional archaeologist with excavation experience in Pompeii and Cumae. Licensed Tourist Guide of the Campania Region. Specialist in Greek and Roman archaeology. More important than any qualification, however, is my passion for sharing the history and archaeology of this extraordinary region. Every tour is designed to be informative, engaging, and tailored to your interests, offering a unique opportunity to experience the ancient world through the eyes of an archaeologist.

The ancient city of Pompeii is probably the most important archaeological site in the world. . . And a tour here led by an archeologist, even better! In the past, it was an agricultural and commercial center where about 20000 people lived. The eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD covered it under about 8 meters of pumice, lapilli and ash. The tour lasts about 2 hours and will be a journey through history where you will see houses, theaters, baths, shops, brothels, casts of the victims, in an incredible state of conservation. It is a unique emotion to visit a Roman city that integrates in all its architectural aspects. During the tour I will talk about the public and private life of the ancient Romans. . . It will be like travelling back in time! How many years lived on average and how tall were they? How long did they work in one day? Who were the richest? Where did free time pass? Where did the slaves come from? Questions to which I will be happy to give you many answers.

If you are planning to visit Pompei. We highly recommend that you book your tour though tours by locals with Paolo as your guide. This was our first time visiting Italy and our first time using tours by local. Paolo did an excellent job providing information on which train we needed from Rome, and how to meet him in Naples. Having firsthand experience excavating he provided many details that we would have overlooked. This was a well-paced informative tour that shouldn’t be missed. If Pompeii is on your itinerary, we highly recommend Paolo as your guide.
This tour was fantastic. Our guide met us promptly and we were transported comfortably to Pompeii. Paolo was excellent: knowledgeable and friendly. He provided many details that made the experience come alive. The information regarding the lives of the citizens of Pompeii were especially compelling. We are experienced travelers and this was a superior tour.
Paolo is an outstanding guide. As an archeologist he has an excellent understanding of Roman history and Pompeii. This is the type of person one needs if one wants a full understanding of Pompeii and the people who lived there. He is very patient and can tailor the tour to your interests. Having a private guide with this background and knowledge makes Pompeii come alive in ways one wouldn’t get otherwise.
We have traveled and toured in many countries with tours by locals. Paolo is one of the best guides I have had, anywhere. His knowledge was incredible and his ease of delivering the information was seamless. So good. Hire him right now before someone else does. 10 out of 5 stars.
Great tour of Pompeii with Mauro! He is super knowledgeable about Pompeii and showed us all of the highlights of this city lost in time. I would highly recommend seeing Pompeii with him.
