My name is Dario and I'm from Sorrento, in the bay of Naples. I have a University Degree in Foreign Languages specializing in History ("Orientale" University of Naples) and a second University Degree in Archaeology ("Luigi Vanvitelli" University of Santa Maria Capua Vetere). I've been a licensed guide of the Campania Region since 1996. As an archaeologist, the archaeological excavation I'm proud of is the one carried out in 2017 in Cumae, which is the "cradle" of Western culture. The Greeks emigrated from their homeland in Southern Italy and founded Cumae as their first settlement. From there the Greeks transmitted their alphabet to the Romans who, by Romanizing it, transmitted the same alphabet to the populations that were gradually conquering in the world. So, if today the whole Western world uses the same alphabet it is thanks to Cumae from which everything started. This magical place is where I used my trowel with great emotion. In addition, together with engineers and scholars of other disciplines, I have conducted scientific research on different topics such as the Roman aqueduct in Pompeii, the fresco technique, the Roman construction techniques and other studies of this kind. The famous eruption of Mt Vesuvius on 24 August of 79 AD caused the destruction of flourishing Roman towns of the Vesuvian area, such as Pompeii, Herculaneum. Pompeii was buried by a thick layer of ash and pumice stones. This Roman town is considered as Unesco heritage site: it is impossible to remain indifferent to the ruins of this ancient town. Pompeii is the only case in the world where it is still possible to find an entire Roman city two thousand years later. The excavations of Herculaneum cover an area of about 5 hectares. The particular details of the burial of Herculaneum, which was submerged by streams of pyroclastic material solidified for an average height of about 20 meters, determined a preservation phenomenon which is absolutely original. Without comparisons to Pompeii, Herculaneum has given us back charred wooden structural and architectural parts of the buildings, preserved even in their fragility due to the lack of oxygen. Those ruins help us understand how temporary everything is.

Dario Davide, wow, what a knowledgeable, an engaging guide! We were touring with our family of six - ages 11 years to 73 years. Our day to tour Pompei and Herculaneum was very hot, Dario was respectful of the physical needs of our family (finding a shaded area when possible to explain certain areas of the digs), but also answering questions from all of us! By the end of our day we felt like we had made a friend.
