Hello everyone, I'm Paolo Mondola, a professional archaeologist and licensed tourist guide (License No. 1792, Campania Region). I was born and raised in the heart of the Bay of Naples, at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, an area renowned for its extraordinary archaeological heritage. Since childhood, I have been passionate about history and archaeology, especially because I grew up just a few minutes from the remarkable archaeological site of Herculaneum. The ancient city of Pompeii is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, and a guided tour with an archaeologist will help you fully understand the history and characteristics of this incredible city of the Roman Empire. In the past, it was an agricultural and commercial center where about 20000 people lived. The eruption of Vesuvius by A. D. 79 covered it under about 20 feet of pumice, lapilli and ash. It is a unique emotion to visit a Roman city that integrates in all its architectural aspects. During the tour I will talk about the public and private life of the ancient Romans. After we'll go to Herculaneum, another incredible ancient Roman city, smaller than Pompeii, but much better preserved. It was a rich city of the Empire that faced the center of the Gulf of Naples; many of his houses are superb and elegant, showing that many of his citizens had achieved good economic prosperity. It was completely buried by approximately 60 feet of pyroclastic material from the same eruption.

This was our first time to Pompeii. It is a huge sight, so I am so glad that we had Paolo to show us the highlights efficiently. His English is excellent and we did not feel rushed on this tour at all. He is very knowledgeable about the history and archeology of this fascinating ancient city. His enthusiasm for the place was infectious. He also took us to Herculaneum which was well worth it, to see the differences between these to places, both if which were affected by the same eruption, but in different ways. We cannot recommend paolo enough. Thank you so much for a truly unforgettable experience.
Paolo is a great historian and archeologist, very knowledgeable. We were a group of 9 adults and he was very informative and answered our questions. The only thing to consider is that We stayed in Capri, so we had to take into account ferry times. Our shuttle driver was late picking us up, and then we hit traffic to so we arrived at the Herculaneum later and he tried his best to get us thru all items more quickly. He was conscientious about our times for the ferry and wanted to get us out in time.
Paolo was extremely knowledgeable and we learned so much about Pompeii and Herculaneum. He answered all our questions and helped us navigate the train. He was very pleasant and helpful as well.
We had an excellent tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum with Paolo! We had been to Pompeii once before with a cruise ship tour, but our tour with Paolo was much more in-depth and thorough. Both sites were SO IMPRESSIVE!! And we learned so much! Paolo arranged for us to have lunch between the two sites which was nice to cool off and get out of the sun for a while!! He was also able to arrange last minute transport for us due to a transit strike! Great time - highly recommended!!
